Thought this was a good video that broke down a lot of what makes the 2.7L a unique engine (Fractured caps, compact graphite iron, square cylinders, offset rods, etc.)

So it turns out the 2.7 Eco is the best F-150 engine after all. Thanks for posting!

I have 2022 with this engine
Interesting read and sounds good but another YouTube has mechanic tearing down gen2 with aprox 90K that failed
Nothing out ordinary about finding one fail out of the many made
He was unable to discover why it spun a rod bearing
The thing that bothered me was the use of wet rubber timing belts as well as the oil pump belt
He bent oil belt over and it showed deterioration cracks
My truck very low mileage but I just can’t see how this is a good thing and was changed in gen2 on cam belt oil pump belt might be common on both gens
I’ve seen oil pump belt discussed here and the mention of fact no one can find a replacement interval from Ford
I find this odd and wish both cam and oil pump belts were chains
Not sure why were changed but given noise my 73 Yamaha TX 750 made from the balancer chain I’m guessing reason for change
I would like to hear more on this issue from others!
Thanks All!!

Had no idea about some of these features. Everyone talks about the CGI block, but I didn't know about the rod offset, piston design, manufacturing methods, and main bearing mfg. I wonder if this will start making its way to other engines in the lineup.

I'll take my Gen 3 3.5L EcoBoost. Now if we are comparing the 2.7L nano to a gen 1 or gen2 3.5L EcoBoost I'll take the 2.7L.
Same here. I had a 2017 2.7L and it was the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. Had 4 oil pans and they finally replaced the block. It stranded me shortly after block replacement and I got rid of that sucker as fast as I could.

The 2.7 is a good overall package, and was built with boost as its primary design criteria. The block is interesting, utilizing the ladder frame two piece setup. Outside the ladder frame it looks like a 80’s small block whereas the 3.5 & 5.0 both use a deep skirted block (block envelopes main bearings and caps are cross bolted into skirt). What is interesting is both the 2.7 & 5.0 use a partially closed deck reinforced design (which is stronger), and the 3.5 is a totally open deck (not as strong). I was surprised to see that. Looks like Ford definitely knew the boost levels would be high in the Nano motors, and presumed us V8 guys would be throwing blowers on top and/or spinning them up.

I must point out he used old 5.0 power figures when comparing torque. Ours make 410 lb ft @4,250, not 400 lb ft @4,500. That was the 3rd gen, we have the 4th gen engine.

Notice the decks on the 2.7 & 5.0 are both reinforced and partially closed, in contrast to the totally open deck in the 3.5. Builders often deck a motor for more bore strength, so partially closed/reinforced deck is superior from the factory.

the 3.5 is a totally open deck (not as strong).
Let's all refer back to the recent video where the weak POS Powerboost spanked the 5.0 repeatedly. Partially closed deck got him a full view of the PB taillights.

My 2023 STX 2.7 is a beast, it has no issues 0-60 in under 5 seconds, I have a few mods that allows it to beast out, like a real true duel custom exhaust, and K&N cold air intake. this allows the engine to breath way more.

Wow! 2wd? Taking a second off 0-60 is impressive!

Yeah Truly dueling it out meaning 2 pipes 1 from each cat on each turbo the whole way back to a muffler plus a cold Air intake Definitely opens them up. Since there are no tunes for 23' PCM still to this day I can't really open it up how I want just yet though. If I had a 22' I would be able to do so. Darn the luck they encrypted the 23' and up PCM's
