Hey there —

Coming onto 60k miles, and with it new spark plugs. Thinking of also cleaning my engine right before swapping the plugs. Read some articles about only using Chevron Techron…. I don’t have any experience with engine cleaners, but seams like a good option.

Here’s my maintenance schedule:
New to 30k miles, changed oil every 3-4k miles. 30-60k miles, changed every 5-6k miles. Oil changed by me or by Ford dealerships.

Gas: 87, mostly from top-tier, but occasionally I run Grocery Store gas (city market) — can’t pass up those rewards!! Before any of you say I need to run 91+ or ethanol free. I tried it, I tracked it, I saw no discernible difference. 87 works just fine fire me, even in the mountains.

Engine: 3.5eb. I run 34” tires.

Techron is one of the fuel system cleaners that actually does work and I am probally going to run the marine version in my new to me fishing boat. If you want to run it do it and don't let me or anyone else stop you. just a heads up my opnion below can be ignored. In short i said techron should not be needed just in a little more detailed way.

Now in my opnion you are already using top tier fuel and that should be doing the job of any fuel treatment. In theory any fuel, top tier or not, should not need a fuel additive because the fuel has a minimun required amount of detergents. another thing is one tank of techron only does so much (unless you actually folow the instructions and run a tank every 3k miles) it really takes multiple tanks and even then your probally not going to gain anything. last thing is the cost it is not worth it in my opnion on an daily driver. The reason i am looking to use the marine version is because its also a fuel stabilizer and on a boat I dont want fuel related issues.

Modern fuels are the best they've ever been, and with ethanol now blended into pretty much everything, there's not much a fuel additive is going to do for you. There's not really a modern petroleum product of note that's not significantly superior to what it was 2 decades ago. Some fuel additives contained ethanol as a detergent. I ran the cheapest fuels through the old 4.0 V6 changing the plugs at 60k intervals and scoping each cylinder, everything was nominal. 150k miles on it and still going strong. 7k mile mobil 1 oil change intervals, 30k mile trans pan flushes. Only thing it needed at 120k was a trans band tightening. It's made 2 cross country trips the past 6 months and is currently in Montana. Every 8 months an emissions o2 sensor throws a code that gets reset and is good for another 8-12 months. Only thing it's needed is a t-stat replacement.

The only thing I will suggest is that if you decide to use Techron , follow the instructions to the letter. Run your tank down as close to empty as you are comfortable and only put in 12 gals of gas. Too many people fill their tank and the product gets diluted, wasting money.

Or read the container of Techron and see how many gallons of gas it's supposed to treat and add the right number of containers to a full tank then run the tank down as low as you feel comfortable before re-filling (I don't let it go below 1/8 tank). I also always add the Techron to the tank at the gas station just before filling with gas. Filling the tank and driving home will mix in the additive.

I have used Chevron gas and Techron for longer than I can recall. Every 5,000 miles I run a can of Techron to my high octane 91 gas. A life-long auto mechanic said many years ago no matter what type of gas one uses do a Techron treatment per the instructions using only high octane every 4-5,000 miles.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
Techron. Believe what you read. I had an occasional smoke problem on start up on my CTS V. I'm talking loads of smoke. It was embarrassing. I bought about 6 bottles and used it everytime I filled up, added some Berryman's Chemtool to the oil (not for long), and the problem disappeared. I put another 150,000 miles on it. No problem. At 203,000 miles it was using no, as in zero, oil. Great stuff.
