ECU module programming guide using FDRS

So when I got in the truck this morning, I checked the Sync version as I always do and it showed 20312. Good news, it means it is unstuck for this trip. Left the USB alone and nothing popped up, but it did say System Updating...

After I got home, I let it run for a few minutes until it popped up saying to restart.

Went inside, took some calls, came out to restart the truck, and now it’s like nothing happened? I let the truck sit for about 30 minutes with the key far far away.

Is this me not being patient enough or is it abnormal?

Sorry, I may not have been clear. After it said to restart, I turned off the truck and went inside. I thought I read you should leave it alone for 20-30 minutes before restarting. I had to take a work call, then went back out and restarted the truck.

You should be good to go. Try rebooting the APIM by holding down radio power and forward seek button on the dash. The Sync version should populate on that screen after a few keys cycles to show 21146.

Yes, ignition on and engine off. Power supply on.

I did not know he had the key off...ooops. I bad, I assumed the key was on.

Ok, restarted laptop, power is 14v, truck is on engine off. 15 min in and doing same thing. No red activity on the mongoose, please wait …loading data keeps cycling. I did notice the IPMA thing is grey instead of purple. .

Ok, now we are getting somewhere. It finally asked me about the old module and is going through the install. Fingers crossed.

Ok, good. It'll take 2.5-3 hours to complete and then you'll be fine.

Ok, all good. The PMI fixed it and the button for my rear camera works now, too. Also no longer shows a IPMA update. The only ones that show are the BCM and the audio one I mentioned before.

I am curious though why there aren’t more updates showing since I am at Sync 23291.

Ford hasn't released the last string of updates for your VIN yet. You've gotten a far as you can go for now. Eventually, they'll release a GWM update that will release the final APIM and TCU updates you're missing.

Okay. So twice now I’ve turned on the truck and the SYNC page still shows 20312. It also still says Restart Required both of those times. Every other time I’ve started the truck, the SYNC version is blank. It’s almost as if Restart Required only appears the few times the APIM is unstuck.

I’ve tried the restart thing a few times with no luck. My next step would be to plug back in to FDRS, but honestly not sure what else to do in there. I’m a little gun shy about touching anything other than updates.

Do your truck still have the OEM Ford battery it was built with?
