So if a battery charger/power supply is necessary to bang out a bunch of module updates using FDRS, then how does the OTA PowerUp process work? If I was a normal owner, oblivious to this whole thread, would all these pending updates get updated OTA eventually? Do the PowerUp packages get bundled together depending on worst-case battery drawdown or something? I still don't understand how the OTA process avoids battery voltage drawdown issues. I know OTAs can fail due to that and sometimes owners have to wait 2+ months for them to get sent out again by the mothership. I don't really get what Ford is thinking or how others (eg Tesla?) have done
The Tesla has a deep well to draw on to keep the 12V battery SOC healthy enough for programming.

Or put another way, hard to drain that huge EV battery keeping the 12V system up.

The Powerboost has a similar advantage over the ICE only F150, but not nearly the deep well of the Lightning or a Tesla

Duh. Right, thanks. OK, what other manufacturers have already implemented OTA updates on ICE vehicles? I think Volvo? Anyway, seems like kind of rhetorical questions for now because none of us seem to know what's going on behind the Ford curtain and what/if criteria must be met to trigger or facilitate a PowerUp package or a standalone OTA module update...

I checked my vehicle owner dashboard yesterday (Ford website) and was prompted to complete a survey on what I thought of the website. I wrote them a book requesting more owner-accessible information about the OTA process, schedule, pending updates and features, etc. I know I/we are the vast minority of the hundreds of thousands of Gen14 owners who even care and want to know this stuff, but still those are the comments I left for them. I'm fully aware that pulling the curtain back so we can all see how the sausage is made would only flood their technical support/fluffer phone lines (and probably fully expose their poor planning?), but we still have to show we're paying attention haha

They can't and won't create that promise/expectation because Ford, themselves, doesn't know when something will be released. Heck, they promised BC OTA for us 2021 Job 1 trucks WOULD be available for nearly a year, but changing dates.

Bottom line, they aren't cooking you a Big Mac meal. They are designing and constantly improving high tech vehicles under scrutinty from everywhere (e.g., government regulations, consumers, politicians, etc.).

With all due respect, if you think having Joe Truckowner look at some "accessible information" on a screen or web site about a promised rollout date for some OTA fix or new feature wouldn't create MORE traffic for Ford to have to answer, you're overlooking the obvious.

I thought my next couple sentences fully acknowledged your last, but ah well

They already are setting open ended expectations with communication like this. Next time I'll assume that this means "in 3 to 6 months"

Not an apologist for Ford, or any company regarding, but the decision to roll out the new tech on the F150 was pretty bold. They could have been much more conservative and kept it Lincoln, or Mach-E/Lightning, while they ironed out the infrastructure, work flow, and unexpected obstacles.

Instead, the 550,000 annual every 40 seconds birth rate F150?

That's jumping in head first and just believing you can pull it off. I'm guessing that regardless of what it looks like as owners, with our one truck at a time perception, Ford has now laid a substantial foundation that will be considerably more mature with the future expansion of electrifying vehicles.

I have to agree, sure there’s a lot of people with a lot of headaches, BUT if Ford takes these issues seriously, they can hammer out some serious tech advancements in a much shorter period of time

There are two Clore Pro-Logix battery chargers on Amazon that look exactly the same. Make sure you get the 20A version.
Do you run the charger at 20A when doing your updates? I ran it at 10A and it kept my truck around 12-12.5 but my explorer only stayed like 11.7-12.2

Run it in power supply (PS) mode. This keeps a constant voltage. Running as a charger the charger is smart and will be testing the battery and varying the voltage based on charge level of the battery.

I did not notice that setting on mine. I only saw 2amp, 10amp, and 20amp. I used 20amp and it kept the voltage over 13 volts for me.

This is on the charger recommended in the first post. button 1 selects the voltage, 6, 12 or Pwr Supply.

If you look in the upper left corner of the 3 X 3 LED cluster, you’ll see an LED for Power Supply. You keep pushing the Volts button and eventually you’ll see that LED light and PS will show up in the voltage screen.

Power supply is important because unlike battery charging mode, power supply mode attempts to keep voltage constant (14.1V is the target) while allowing current to float. Battery charge mode does just the opposite—it allows voltage to float and attempts to keep current constant. Stable voltage is more important for programming.
