Was at my local BJ’s gas station today and saw an F150 KR pull up on the other side of me not sure what year it was.
I saw his VIN # covered up from inside cab and asked why he did that. He said he didn’t want anyone take the VIN a making a key then taking his truck!
What are your thoughts on covering up the VIN # ?
Thanks

He must of had a bad experience at some time but I didn’t think copying the VIN would also give the programming code for key.

I used to cover my VIN when theft was at an all time high here. It appeared to affect CDJR vehicles more where suspects would walk up, photograph the VIN, and come back later that night and take the vehicle. There was a F150 phase in 2023/2024 but Toyota SUVs and trucks seem to be the hot ticket item now.

Carfax application among others now can pull the VIN from the plate, so it's a bit moot.

Covering the VIN number really won't stop anyone from getting the VIN number if they want it. On many internet auto parts sites, you can enter the vehicle license plate number and this will bring up the VIN number to order parts and accessories.

If it was that easy to get a copy of a fob, dealers would cover all the vins on their lots.

Dealer will not make a key w/o the physical title with you plus the key needs to be programmed. Keyless ignition a Key fob can be programmed to the vehicle with software within minutes

I hope they would accept registration rather than title, since many trucks have their titles held by the lienholder.

This wouldn't prevent anyone from copying his fobs. Thieves use a scanner to intercept the two way communication between the fob and target vehicle. Then create a clone from that to steal the vehicle in about 3-5 minutes. An inexpensive faraday pouch for keys is much more effective at preventing your keys from being duplicated.

I rarely use my fob to lock or unlock my truck. I hit the lock button on the inside on the door or on the outside door handle. Unlocking with my hand behind the door handle. Remote start is done with FP. This way I am not transmitting my fob code that could be copied.
