This is just an example of how I did it, not a recommendation. Ford pissed me off by tripling the price of the factory stowable bed extender and then removed the threads to mount it (requiring taillight removal to apply a nut/washer on the backside). So, this was an exercise in pure, spiteful stubbornness. Decide for yourself if there are any products or practices worth emulating. It won't hurt my feelings if the answer is "NO!".

Parts Used:
  • Aftermarket bed extender - I cannot distinguish any difference from my previous factory unit
  • Wurth 09179010 Pre-Bulbed Insert M10-1.5 - search a couple Kia parts websites for best price plus shipping to your location. This is a darn-near perfect fit for the unthreaded mounting hole in the bed. Other options had no stock and required minimum order quantities of 1K or more.
  • M10-1.5 x 50mm - only for a makeshift way to install the threaded insert. I added a thin 3/8" washer that was on-hand.

Why not a standard M10 Rivnut? The hole is significantly larger than the recommended range for a standard rivnut. It would leave about 1mm of purchase around the circumference, which simply did not give me much comfort. Others report doing it without issue, so use your judgment. This type of insert has about 3.5mm of purchase around the circumference and a large cross pattern of material on the backside. This type is also more prone to spinning, but that is the point of the entire assembly, so not really a worry for me.

The catch is that this insert is longer than a standard rivnut, so my rivnut installation tool will not quite reach the threaded part. There are lots of examples of installation without specialty tools - here is one. I chose to work with what was readily available to me on a Sunday morning - long-nose locking pliers and ratcheting wrench. It worked but I wouldn't recommend it over a more proper method.

Photos pretty much tell the rest of the story with a few exceptions. The 4 plastic inserts were smacked into place using a scrap of wood and a rubber mallet. The rubber feet may require tweaking for your application. I chose to keep short feet on the bed rug and long feet on the tailgate side. T50 bit felt like it had a lot of play in the screws but minimal torque is needed.

There seems to be a spectrum of opinions on this and I don't pretend to be an expert. My understanding is that the coating helps to "bridge the galvanic gap" between aluminum and steel. So, yes it will react but slowly.

So what is slowly? I plan to have the truck for a long time so wondering. Thanks!

I tend to keep my vehicles for 10-15 years, so I am there with you. All indications are that zinc is the go-to option to protect when mating steel to aluminum. I consider this to be a lifetime solution and certainly no more of a concern than a hardware store washer and nut on the backside.

Here is one of the better sources, in that it gives great visual information. No offense taken if someone comes to different conclusions.

Every fastener installed at the factory is zinc coated. No aluminum fastners are used at all besides ground studs that are drawn arc welded on the cowl top and side sill. Granted..all of the fasters will be ecoated and baked...but there still will be steel with zinc coating on top of aluminum without any coating at the mating surface level. I wouldnt worry about it too much. Worst case you could spray the fastener with some sort of paint before installing.

OP, this is a great post! Wish I wouldve thought of it when installing my carryover 2016 extender on my 2022. Removing that nut for an optional accessory mount was an easy cost savings I'd imagine and over life of product it would be a substantial savings.

Absolutely fantastic find/tutorial. Thank you!

Your finding of the Kia squash inserts was awesomely helpful.

The only modification I did to what you did is add a washer that "surrounds" the exposed portion of the Kia squash inserts because there was too much flex in the bed extender when installed. Adding the washer gave the extender plastic pivot plate something flat to snug up against. I used these (one on each side):

Small Parts Steel Flat Washer, Black Oxide Finish, ASME B18.22.1, 1" Screw Size, 1-1/16" ID, 2" OD, 0.134" Thick (Pack of 10)

Plus, the washers being black blends in nicely.

Again, thanks. Very pleased with how it turned out. Now I can sell on the Amps Research/OEM flip extender (that I never used b/c it always seemed to get in the way).

Now to see if something similar can be done on the Ranger....

Love mine. Got it in '21 when I bought the truck (used my Fordpass points).

Mine had the same problem (if I understand you correctly; that it is loose at the pivot point). If so, then see my post above (#8). I added the oversize black washers and now it is snuggled down quite nice. Not loose at all.

So the odd part is what’s the big deal about removing the tail lights take like five minutes or less.
