Finally got around to posting my 1K miles UPR catch can results. To my surprise, I don't see any indication of condensation mixed with the oil. When I emptied the catch can, it looked similar in color to the oil I drained from the oil pan; dark amber. Any way, I wanted to measure the amount of oil with a popsicle stick, if only I had one, so I used a kitchen knife (shhh don't tell my wife, yes I wiped it off and some times use them as a flat blade screw driver)...

As you can see, I have about 1/2" of oil as shown on the knife tip...

It may not seem like much and the port injection helps the intake valves, but I'm not sure where this oil would pool inside the intake manifold if I didn't catch at least some of it.....
Straight back to the butter dish!

Pass me some of that 5w30 please lol

Best of luck to all Ford should have added one of these from factory and I regret running truck without one from day 1.
I wouldn't wait, catch cans are easy to remove if you don't have a mod friendly service dept. I believe there is some truth to the port injection helping, but that doesn't cover everything. I don't have pics to prove it, but when I owned a 2020 3.5 EB (direct and port injection), at 10K miles, I removed the lower silicon boot from intercooler; I'll just say it wasn't dry... I removed the intercooler and plumbing and washed it out with Simply Green then I installed a catch can. Checked the same boot at 20K miles and found only a very slight hint of oil in the valley of the ribs.

At one time owners were drilling weep holes at this location to let the oil weep out. There was also some speculation that the active grill shutters not only helped economy but also controlled intercooler condensation ?‍♂

Back in my 6.4 Powerstroke days, just cleared 100K miles, I took her in for power loss concerns. Ford removed the intercooler, plumbing and intake manifold. The tech knew exactly what was wrong. The PCV (oil mist) and EGR (exhaust) are combined making a nice thick black tar concoction coating the intake manifold. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Makes me wonder whether all modern engines today have some sort of exhaust tube that returns some amount of exhaust back through the intake (reduce NOX), combining with PCV and then what....

I am keeping everything that I drain out of mine, in 15k miles, I'm about 1/8 full on a skinny olive jar. This last time, there were tiny black squishy chunks in addition to the usual brown oil/water. The stated harms from running a catch can are exceedingly speculative, and the potential warranty issue makes no sense (even if you thought they would care, just keep the original hose and reinstall it before you take the truck in....total time cost is 15 minutes). The potential benefits (avoiding the need to walnut blast your heads and valves) seem to vastly outweigh the costs (30 minutes to install and $180). Finally, the catch cans are a highly robust and simple device based upon simple but clever engineering.

Fordtechmakuloco recently did a video on the shortcomings of the new system: bottom line, it's better, but it's still WAY worse (in terms of gunked up valves and intake ports) than a pure PI system.

The clean air flows into the engine on the driver's side typically. It then flows throught crankshaft area and is with drawn through the PCV Valve on the passenger side of the engine.

I’m at 5K miles. First was at 1000K so 4K on the second oil change. Using the oil that Ford says to use. Garage kept, Springtime mix of cold and hot days here in CenTex. Mostly mixed driving, but a couple of 200+ mile day trips in the mix. Normal driving, towing ~4000 lbs. 30 miles each, 4 or 5 times on this oil. Condensation is minimal as far as I can tell. Just about a inch of oil in the catch can.

I installed the UPR version on my 5.0L at 10 miles. The 5.0L has direct and port injection like the EB engines, but no turbo/intercooler plumbing obviously.

I still felt that even with port injection that's suppose to "wash" the back side of the intake valves, the oil mist is settling some where in the intake manifold. Like others say, can't hurt, easy to remove it if you need to.

I did modify my UPR though. I didn't like the way the bracket was sitting sky high in the engine bay, so I shortened it to be the same height as the battery. It's still higher than the engine though. I also didn't like the way the inlet hose from the valve cover dipped way down then up to the UPR. I felt that oil will collect in the lower bend. So I modified the hose enough so the oil could seep back to the valve cover and yet still allow the engine to rock on its mounts.

At just over 1000 miles now, only about a tablespoon of oil, no condensation that I could see, truck is kept in a garage over night.
Nice! ? I also went with UPR’s Catch Can. They’re the best in the business. Do your own research and you’ll see why they have a class leading design in how they manufacture and build their catch cans. They can be a little pricey but you definitely get what you pay for which is quality. From the can all the way to the hoses/connectors the quality is great! I myself have gotten their 5.0L catch can for my Coyote, Clean Side Separator, added the Billet Pro Series Check Valve on my hoses, Adjustable Hi-Flo Billet PCV Fitting and Billet One-Way Crankcase Breather (to replace my engine oil cap to help engine get rid of extra crankcase pressure under high boost). I’ve seen people try to compare UPR to JL and it’s not even close! Here are pictures of my setup.
