it sucks but yes, you are completely correct. Sadly, they are all in the business of making money. It is not about making the best product for the consumer. It’s kind of like mil-spec. The cheapest product that meets the design requirements
Mil-Spec ensures a widget made by company B is made to the same specifications/requirements as Company A. If company B won the contract, cost is a factor but not necessarily the deciding factor. I know this as a retired DoD engineer and was Level III DAU certified and worked on bid proposals and awards.

Thanks bud, yes I just bought the same system from UPR as well and went with the pro valve as well. I am in the same agreement as you with saving my engine for the long haul also. I have not had an engine code as I don’t have any catch can on my trucks yet. But I ordered a J&L system with only one can for my 2012 F-150. I may have to return that and get the same system for my 2012 ecoboost.

For those with J&L catch can... would there be any drawback to installing the PowerBoost version on my 3.5 EcoBoost? It looks like the PowerBoost version just relocates the can to the firewall near the brake booster which looks more natural (vs. the battery box where there is no room on the PB engine). The only thing I notice is a possible obstruction for the dipstick if mounting on the driver's side firewall. Any thoughts on this?

My take... Go for it! When you receive the parts do a fitup without actually installing anything. At the end of the day the engines are the same, so the parts layout should go together the same.

The only difference is is the mounting location. There’s some electronics in the location where the Eco boost model gets mounted.

there is essentially no obstruction for the dipstick

What manufacturer makes the best / most effective oil separator. I have a 2025 XL, 4x4, 5.0 on order. Thanks.

This thread and others are full of opinions and testimonials. There seem to be 3 primary contenders: UPR, J&L, and Improved Racing. All seem to have very positive reviews. I just ordered a J&L considering their price point and reviews on build quality and customer service.

In my experience with UPR and J&L, don’t expect them to catch 100% of the blow by. I own a ’22 5.0. At 100 (now have 22K) miles I purchased a UPR. Every 1000 miles or so I remove the output hose. I take a Q-Tip and rub it around the inside of the connectors and the cotton is always covered in oil. Not dripping wet, but the white cotton is now tan/brown in color. I then clean the output hose with brake cleaner and reattached it. I decided to purchase an identical second catch can from UPR. I connected them in series to see how much oil was getting past the first catch can. I was amazed to see the second catch can collected about 1/2 as much oil as the first catch can! Certainly this isn’t a highly sophisticated scientific experiment, but it told me oil is getting past the first catch can so keep the second catch can in place. Now, how much oil is getting past the second catch can ;) I still have a small amount of oil in the output hose, but the Q-Tip isn’t nearly as tan/brown now. Will there ever be a 100% efficient catch can, I doubt it, but Improved Racing claims 95-98% efficiency...

Improved Racing claims 95-98% efficiency. I my experience with UPR (est. ~95% efficiency) and J&L (est. 80-90% efficiency) I have some amount of oil in the output hose. Catching some percentage is better than letting 100% get to the intake IMO...

From the looks of it, Improved Racing does not make one for the 5.0.

I got the J&L PowerBoost unit installed today on my 2024 3.5 EcoBoost. Super easy install and seems very good quality!
