More reliable, MORE efficient (especially when towing) better balanced, doesn't cook it's oil, waaaay better engine braking, and has a much higher ceiling for maximum power potential.

Yeah, that 5.0 is garbage. Can't imagine how dumb one would have to be to buy one.

You and I both know that if there was a 5.0PB option available, you'd drop those turbos and that puny little v6 like a bad habit.
More reliable? Anecdotal wives’ tales without empirical data. More efficient? 16/22 for the 5.0 and 17/23 for the 3.5.
However, your horse obviously loves that truck and that’s proof enough for me ?
You did read that I would choose the 5.0 if I was building an off road machine?

Lol. Nice to know you're thinking about me. ?

Statements like these make me love my "puny little v6" even more

Makes the strong, tough "V8" guys look for more excuses on why they chose the V8.. Usually because it sounds cool

And how do you get to a higher power potential?? Forced induction maybe??? And at what cost? $8-$9k?? $10k+++

Will say it again.. both are very good at what they do... To say one is "better" than the other, is just ignorant

Towed with my 21... and compared to my 11... It was night/day difference. The 21 was so much smoother, shifted great, and it didn't feel like I was WOT. Same motor/gears.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
To say that turbos WILL go out is 100% not factual

A buddy and a coworker both with 5.0s are on their second engine.. one with 70k miles, another with 130k miles... That's just people I know

Another good friend has 302k miles on his 2011 Ecoboost with original turbos

To say one engine is better than the other... is just stupidity.. they're both great engines

I prefer the quiet performance of a 3.5

You might read Enrique Fantastico 's thoughts later in this thread. He has some points. You have some points. I have never even owned a turbocharged car (and never will?) but I have driven them. Bottom line, a 3.5 is a 30% smaller motor that must rely on turbos spun by hot exhaust gas to do the same work as a 5.0. It is asking for later trouble. That turbo is boosting just going up minor hills, reasonable acceleration away from a stop light, towing a fishing boat, or running 70 mph. This means that they are being utilized close to full time. I understand we all have our opinions, but boosting a small motor to gain more power to match a 5.0 is a recipe for future failure. Tacking a Ford supercharger onto my 2023 5.0 sounds good but makes no sense.

I think you might be best off with a 4 speed 4.6 truck. By your logic, it should be infinity more reliable than the 5.0.

Sounds like the wisdom of someone who has never driven the 3.5 with the boost gage enabled on the dash.

Utter nonsense, actually.

In normal driving boost is almost NEVER in play. There is just no need.

Just as with the 5.0, there is no need to run in the 5000-7000 rpm range for anything other than spirited driving or towing.

Other than your "towing a fishing boat* scenario (for which you give no indication of size or weight), all of your examples are ZERO boost for my '21 Lariat.

I like the 3.5. I really do... they're fast af.

But I currently have one that burns more oil than gas. It's supposedly getting replaced under extended warranty.

I've been trying not to mention it, but we're getting screwed by the dealer pretty bad. This is week 6. They JUST got the engine out today. Still not torn down. I'm paying for the rental myself and am extremely pissed off about it.

Considering legal action.
In my state after 30 business days they have to buy it back. They follow state rules but here in MN, they bought my 20 back and gave me full MSRP towards a new 22 plus 5k (the 5k isn't usual). They didn't deduct any value for the 21k miles (some states deduct for miles). It was because they couldn't source a transmission part within the time limit.

I never contacted a lawyer. Ford customer service and asked about a buyback. After approval I had to gather a lot of paperwork that took me a good hour or so to do and the whole process took about 4 weeks.

Ironically the buyback approval happened the day after they fixed the truck and they said it didn't matter it was fixed.

Very happt to hear of your pleasant resolution!

I don't think lemon laws apply to a 5 year old vehicle under extended warranty though.
Ah, I see. I believe it's only through the 3/36.

5.0 hands down. If only for the fact that there are many forces around us that work hard to try and abolish those kinds of engines. Get it while you can. You will always be able to get an eco boost or other non n/a engine.

This guy has been testing all the half ton powertrains (Ram 5.7, GM TurboMax, GM Duramax, Ford 3.5 EB, Ford 5.0 V8, GM 5.3, GM 6.2), and as a self proclaimed Hemi enthusiast still had to choose the 5.0 as his #1 pick after driving and towing with all of them.

The latest gen 5.0 got the best efficiency of any 1/2 ton powertrain while towing 8,000 pounds, was the 2nd fastest (only behind the 3.5 EB), yes that means the 5.0 accelerated faster than the GMC 6.2 at wide open throttle with trailer in tow. It also saw the second lowest revs under way, not needing to exceed 3,100 rpm where every other V8 exceeded 4,000 rpm towing this same trailer. Good video, although he does miss a few points imo.

I fix software bugs!
Reminiscent of an old 4bbl, or more accurately, a tri power progressive setup.
I remember when we used to flip the air cleaner cover upside down on a 4bbl 454 (making 200 HP lol) in the 70's.... good for another 10 HP....... WhaaaaaWhaaaaaaWhaaaaa with every shift :)
