My 22 3.5EB is solid so far and pulls my trailer very well. It is fast and fun to drive as I do love BOOST. I own a 400hp 2.4 boosted and an LS3 boosted 700hp.
with that said I bought the truck for a daily driver and pull my trailer couple times a year.
I was told the mileage would be better with the 3.5 for daily.
when I first got it I was getting up to 24 mpg and coming from a 28mpg RAM eco diesel I felt good about it.
I now have it leveled with Fox and Fuel wheels with 24’s my mpg has dropped to 12 pulling trailer @ 60mph.
Daily mpg has dropped to 16 @ 70 mph
Good thing is I don’t drive it very far daily, but the 1200 mile towing is a killer.
my next truck would be the 5.0 with the factory SC.

You must be a flat lander.

Just looked, yup MN.

Around here, everything's uphill both ways. ?
Think again.

Western Idaho.

While it's not Colorado, we have altitude and mountains here, too. Boise is 2800 FT.

If reliability is your thing then 5.0 is the only choice, don’t believe me, ask the techs.

The 3.5 may be peppier, but found it consumed major quantities of fuel when towing. Went from 10.3L/100 to 18.3L/100 (10.42 mpg) when I towed any distance. My normal was 24 to 27 mpg.

The 5.0L handles the towing without gobbling quite so much fuel. 15.28 mpg with my normal being around 22 mpg, but have not driven enough to get an accurate fuel consumption yet.

The 3.5L Powerboost, hardly knew the trailer was behind me, with lots of power to handle the extra weight, not sure of the fuel economy although the few times I pulled the trailer noticed the fuel economy suffered, but was getting 24 to 29 mpg with it, but only had the truck six months and at least two of those were sitting at the dealers lot being poked and prodded, then I traded in for the 5.0L as I needed a reliable truck, not one that I never new if it would start or not.

Since the day i drove it home, my truck has never been below 7,000 ft. ?‍♂

In case you missed it, I own a 3.5 as well. It's almost ALWAYS in boost, so I'm calling bullshit on your bullshit. Just because it's not pegging the needle, Doesn’t mean it's not working hard. My complaint with it isn't power. It hauls ass. It's the fact it lost compression and started rolling coal at 117,000 miles. Costing me a f*ck ton of money, even though it still "under warranty" until 150k.

The 2011 5.0 I just sold had 220,000 trouble free miles on it and still ran like the day it was made.

Anecdotes aside, your truck is producing 25% more torque, with 30% less displacement. Use some logic dude. You have a great engine, but to claim it's less stressed than a 5.0 is just plain silly.
I think your wife just drives that Flex like she stole it…?

Sorry to hear about your boost experience but that doesn’t mean his is Bull. Mine rarely ever went into boost until I put huge tires on and I was very surprised by this when it was new. Even now it only comes on if I force it trying to get up a hill etc.

With my past EB engines I found myself in boost more often than not. I had to put effort in babying to not.

Those numbers can be deceiving.

It's all in the "Powerband" and with a properly functioning 10-speed tranny, "rubber to the road" doesn't necessarily translate to "HP & TQ".

Running flat out on a 1/4 mile is one thing.

But if you're not driving in Nevada or Wyoming... twisting, up & down a backroad with or without a trailer it's a completely different story.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
Sounds like the wisdom of someone who has never driven the 3.5 with the boost gage enabled on the dash.

Utter nonsense, actually.

In normal driving boost is almost NEVER in play. There is just no need.

Just as with the 5.0, there is no need to run in the 5000-7000 rpm range for anything other than spirited driving or towing.

Other than your "towing a fishing boat* scenario (for which you give no indication of size or weight), all of your examples are ZERO boost for my '21 Lariat.
Well, I guess it is a miracle engine. I stand corrected.

What’s the misconception, did you listen to what all the folks said instead of focusing on one off the cuff comment and dissecting it? ?

I wouldn't say mine is always in boost. Any acceleration on the highway, steep hill (or moderate, on the highway) and it goes into boost.

Normal from the light driving and light acceleration around town however isn't usually met with boost. I have no idea how the elevation would affect it though as we are around 800'.

Short version - in between what you two are saying. LOL

2018 Volvo XC60 and 23' Tremor 5.0 ordered.
This is all backed up by a forged steel crankshaft and sinter forged con rods. The 5.0 is a very stout and overbuilt motor for an N/A engine.
this is what sold me on the 5.0. hearing guys get over 700hp off the stock motor just brings relief to my ears. i don't plan on racing, selling or modding my motor so knowing it's strong and should last a long time is why i choose it. other wise i'd just go the 3.5 that was on the lot and sell it in a couple years.

2021 XLT Screw 5.0,4x4,302Asport,
that's actually exactly my setup, a light-ish (supercab) 5.0 with 3.73. Tows up and down mountains no issue whatsoever and does not overheat.

my buddy on the other hand had a gorgeous brand new 2022 ram 1500 sport with hemi whose transmission basically almost fell out trying to tow a 6,000 lb trailer.

+1 for ford
Wow. That's unusual for the Ram. They have ZF boxes which are incredibly bulletproof.
