Seems like I've seen a thread on this before I just don't see it.
I'm about to need an oil change and think I'm gonna start doing it myself since we can add in fordpass again.
What are you guys running in your trucks. I know we need specific meets in our oil but when I put in autozone it only brings up the Motorcraft 5w-30 synthetic blend. What's other oils that meets our 5.0 needs

Yes, lots of threads on this (and just as many opinions). With 8,000 miles on I’m on OCI #3 with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and FL500 MC filter. Very happy with things so far. Good luck.

What's bad is the price of oil to do myself I might as well go to dealership pay a little more and there's no question if something happened to my motor it's completely on them and no question warranty covered

I’ve been running Pennzoil Platinum in mine since new along with Motorcraft oil filter. As far as I know it meets all the required Ford specs.
Even buying the oil on sale I only save a little compared to just taking it to the dealer, but I enjoy doing basic maintenance myself. Just save the receipts and make note of date and odometer readings when services are done.

This is what I pick up and just have a valvoline place close to the house change it. They charge me 35. I do it mostly so I don’t have to deal with the used oil.

Despite all the opinions I feel like you can't go wrong with Amsoil. Even some of the haters out there will still agree that Amsoil is good oil, and it consistently gets great reviews across a variety of platforms. "Project Farm" on YouTube did a multi-video oil evaluation and Amsoil came out on top. If you don't like the garage / redneck type science of Project Farm, then head over to the BITOG forums (Bob is the oil guy) where you can find enough scientific oil analysis and evaluation and discussion to make your head pop.... Again, Amsoil is consistently considered a great oil by the "nerds" on BITOG.

The bottom line is that proper maintenance and regular oil changes are really what matter most.

A 6-quart and 1-filter Amsoil change will cost about $80 to $100 if you do it yourself, but you will probably only have to do it once a year (10,000 miles) or so. On the other hand... You can buy 6 Quarts of full synthetic 5W-30 from Costco for about $30-$40 and a $5 Motorcraft filter from any auto parts store (total of about $35-$45 per oil change for DIY) and change your oil 2-3 times per year every 3k-5k miles, for about the same cost.

So... Use higher quality oil that is more expensive and change less often, or.... Use lower quality oil that is cheaper and change more frequently.

I've done both strategies... I had a 2008 Ford Explorer with the 4.6L 3v V8 and I used Costco-bought Mobil 1 Synthetic (5w-30) and Motorcraft FL820S filters, changing the oil every 3k to 5k for 10 years. At about 130k miles on the engine, I finally needed to replace the cylinder heads due to broken exhaust studs causing an exhaust leak and when I tore the engine down it was the absolute cleanest engine (inside) I have ever seen. On another vehicle, a 2013 F150 3.5L Ecoboost, I used Amsoil Signature 5w-30) full synthetic and Amsoil filters. I changed the oil once a year regardless of mileage (would average 10k miles per year). After about 5 years the vehicle got the notorious timing chain rattle on cold start (about 100k miles on the engine). Again I had to tear down the engine to repair it, and again I found it to be spotless inside with hardly any wear showing.

Both the above vehicles are still on the road and still running strong using two different oil change strategies and two different brand products.

If you want to be more frugal, buy the cheapest full synthetic oil you can find at Walmart that has the Ford WSS-*** oil spec from your owners manual, and a Motorcraft filter and change it every 3k miles and you'll be absolutely fine. Not to mention the peace of mind of checking your truck over every 3k miles. If you prefer to be more bougie then buy the Amsoil and their filter and change it every 10k-15k miles, but this will afford you less "eyes on" the engine to potentially spot other issues.

As for your warranty.... KEEP DETAILED RECORDS including receipts for the oil purchases and dates, and the exact mileage you did each oil change! If you have a surveillance camera in your garage or in your driveway, I'd even save the video on a computer just in case you ever have to prove it. On my 2013 F150 that I used Amsoil on, and had to do a complete timing assembly replacement on... it had an extended warranty. They denied the claim stating I couldn't prove I did the oil changes even though I had years of receipts. I eventually went through Arbitration with the BBB and I won my case and was reimbursed for all the parts and labor (~$4k). The arbitrator stated it was clear from my records that the vehicle was maintained and the provisions of the warranty didn't specify who had to do the oil changes, just that "regularly scheduled maintenance according to manufacturer specifications had to be performed" .

I'm debating if I'm wanting to go full synthetic or synthetic blend. If I go full it scares me because if say we come to take a trip and I don't have time to change my own oil and bring it somewhere who's to say their actually going to put full back in. Around here you can't see what their doing in the back just have to trust they do it.
