My '23 5.0L 157" 4x4 with 3.31 gear gets 21.6-21.9 in Eco mode with the cruise set at 75. That's driving on I-40 and I-81 in East Tennessee with its mountains, rolling hills and curves.

The truck has just under 6k miles.

Excellent! Especially for a longboi truck—that’s what I’m looking for.
Edit: wow your truck only took 2 1/2 months from order to delivery? Was there any missing features that‘s supposed to be there?

Nothing was missing.. I took delivery 3 months, 6 days from my order date. And I was delayed a week because the tailgate was boogered up on the corner when Granger received it from the bed liner spray-in. Pretty Amazing.

I get the advertised 22 mpg on the highway with my 5.0L and I am not a slow driver. Usually up around 70-75 MPH. Here is my average MPG to date on my 2023. I will state for the record I fill it with premium. It sees a lot of hard acceleration too, because it’s so fun! Not driven like a grandpa in the least.

Well we know the 2.7L is more efficient, then. I have a 302A SCREW 2.7 and the truck sees wide open throttle just about daily, and it sees governor 1x a week or more, and my lifetime average is 19.6 with some towing in there too lol.

On flat ground I typically see no boost at 75mph unless a hill or incline then maybe 1 to 3 lbs which is not DEEP into the boost especially since it will make 21 to 22 lbs. I'm tuned also.

To be honest the turbos on the 3.5eco don't kick in as much as you would think. Especially at low speeds. While towing at highway speeds, I only see them come into play under moderate-hard acceleration and when going up uphill to maintain MPH.
I'm just thinking out loud here-I assume that turbo induced power while towing, and higher rpm's on a v8 (higher rpm's to match the power of an eco under boost) while towing are at the same level of efficiency?
In general I'd say you are correct. My friends 16 5.0 got around 25 going 70ish while my PB was at about 22. To be fair mine was at about 1600 miles, not broken in.

Do the math and the cost savings for gas based on a given engine is trivial. More important is the cost for long term maintenance and likelihood of repairs and possible problems with towing (as with the 2.7L engine).

I’d be cautious of anecdotal mpg claims as well. The published numbers typically hold true if not rosy in their predictions of actual mileage results. 2.7EB leads the impressive group of engine choices in this category
True... I think these estimated MPGs are with their best geared rearend option of 3.55, downhill with tonneau covers, etc

I said that and then we spent the past 3 days on the Florida southwest coast. Stayed on Captiva Island, but went sight seeing all the way down to Marco Island. Here's the dashboard of my favorite Rapid Red Powerboost upon our return today

430hp/570lb.ft. and just heaven on a trip baby!

At one point we were driving through Naples and I looked down at the numbers since breakfast and lol...

40mph with 0rpm and 30.3mpg tooling around town. Are you kidding me?! I so love this truck!

I keep my boost gauge up, and while I have a PB not a pure ICE, for cruising at highway speed they are identical. In still air I have 0 PSI boost at 75 MPH; with a headwind I'll have 1-4 PSI. That said, the boost is not the issue, but the "parachute" coefficient of drag that these trucks feature. The only real solution is to slow down and get behind an 18 wheeler with a box trailer no matter what power plant you have. I would say avoid the tow mirrors, but that's not the issue so much as replacing that whole setup with cameras (i.e. better visibility and zero extra drag). That's not really something that we can do, so I'd trade the mileage for the better visibility and wait for Ford to figure out how a webcam works.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? I’ve been hypothesizing this for a while now seeing how at 75mph or higher, the Ecoboosts are deep into the boost. I’ve also seen claims that it’s more efficient at towing than the Ecoboosts, which boosts (pun intended) my hypothesis even more. With the NA V8, you are only getting the power that those 8 cylinders are capable of providing, while the turbo engines pump air and more fuel to make more power to overcome the increased resistance.

Edit: I guess my question wasn’t too clear. Is the 5.0 more efficient at 75-80 mph than the Ecoboosts when NOT towing?
I cant speak for the EcoBoost ,but I have a 2021 RCSB FX4 5.0 3:73 gearing and i just came off of a 300 mile trip. In normal mode it averaged 17.2 . On the return trip in SPORT mode it average 19.0 at 75-80 mph. In sport mode interstate driving is more responsive.

More cylinders equals more power lost from pumping action of the additional pistons. Also more pollution with the smaller cylinders which is why the trend to fewer cylinders with modern "low emission" engines.

Most of the engine's power goes into overcoming air drag and pickups have the drag coefficient of a brick. At 80 mph the air drag is 4 times as great as at 40 mph. My 2022 truck with the 3.5L ecoboost gets it best mpg at speeds below 55 mph. Going faster than that burns more gas and I need to decide if it is worth it to get to my destination 2-5 minutes sooner. Usually it is not.

One can either decide to pretend their is a way to get good fuel economy driving their truck at 80 mpg or they can slow down and or have a second vehicle that is more fuel efficient. For the past 20+ years I have had a pickup or large SUV, and a Prius that gets 45 mpg at 80 mph. With the new F-150 in 2022 we also bought a Toyota Rav4 plugin hybrid that has been averaging about 99 mpg. Guess which vehicle is used the most for daily errands.

In years past the theologians would argue over how many angels could fit on the head of a pin. All the posts about getting better fuel economy without slowing down amount to the same thing.
My 2022 5.0 MPG tanks over @72 mph. Efficient truck at 75-80mph does not exist.

But turbos at that speed to suck the gas in.
