Hello all,

I just installed the console shifter on my '22 STX so I wanted to put together a list and some pointers to maybe help some people out with their conversion.

*** I recommend buying a kit from one of the third party retailers. They've done the work gathering everything, making harnesses, and removing the guess work. However, if you're like me and just like figuring things out or you want to save a little bit of money, then this is for you.***

The shifter and trim parts came from a Ford dealer and the connectors came from Mouser.com. Some oem dealers make you provide a VIN to verify that the part works with your vehicle and a few don't. You can always buy from ebay. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say where I got mine so I won't.

Sorry I didn't take more pics but if you don't know how to solder or make wire connections, I wouldn't recommend making your own harness. My only advice is to clearly label both ends of the wire and start with the column shifter connector. Then install the pinned end into the corresponding hole on the console shifter connector.

Shifter and trim part #'s
  1. ML3Z-7210-Q (Lever Gear Shift)
  2. ML3Z-15672A40-A (Access Cover)
  3. ML3Z-99045G34-A (Mat)
  4. ML3Z-3530-AA (Shroud Assembly) (blue) - Double check higher trim levels for other available colors
Harness connector part #'s
  1. 538-34825-0160 (Column shifter connector) (I soldered the wires to the leads on this connector)
  2. 571-284666-1 (Console shifter connector) (There is a pigtail available from Ford but it is $100. If you can wait a few weeks, Aliexpress has them for $10)
  3. 22 or 20 gauge wire
  4. Pins for console connector
  5. Wire strippers
  6. Heat shrink tubing
  7. Wiring harness tape
  8. Optional - Soldering iron for column shifter connection
Connector Pinouts

I don't understand the appeal to this, you lose storage space. I'm not a console person anyway, my truck's coming without it. But if I had to have it, I would opt for column shift.

Nice of you to put together the list of parts though, i'm sure that will be helpful for someone.

Is the column shifter really that bad? I have on my new STX and I have no issues coming from a RAM 1500 with the easy dial shifter. I don't understand why that would be worth the time, and especially the money it would cost just to swap....but again to each their own! Kinda neat that you can actually do it on your own.

I’m with you, don’t get the appeal. You just lose half of your console space

The proper crimps for the connectors are $20 or so. You can't properly crimp those style pins w/ the run of the mill wire tools.

Props to you for tackling this and for the great writeup as a nice forum contribution.

As a few others have said, I would also prefer a column or dial shifter over the console shifter, which I have, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

I am interested in going the opposite way...do you think it's feasible to swap console for column shift given your experience?

From what I understand, you would have to change out the steering column because you wouldn't have the bracket to mount the shifter to. There's another thread on this forum regarding that. You would still have to make a harness as well.

Ahhh... I knew it couldn't be that easy. I'd love to order a new truck but can't get the sport appearance with the column shifter. Oh well everything's a compromise. Thanks for the info and I hope you're enjoying the console shifter!

Nice write up currently working on doing this following your write up. I’m having issues finding the pins for the console connector. Where’d you source these from? Or if you could point me in the aliexexpress pigtail route that’s be great. Thanks!
