In the event you don't know, before you work on your brakes you MUST put the vehicle into Brake Maint Mode. That frees up the electric parking brake AND releases the vacuum assist to the brake booster. It also allows you to be able to spread the piston to add new pads AND do a manual bleed, so brake maint mode is important-

Now here's the thing I learned today while doing my big brake kit. If you go into the owners manual, THERE IS NO PROCEDURE OR EVEN MENTION OF THIS MODE. WTF FORD? So I get online and I find 2-3 video's that all show the same process albeit on 2021's. SO I get into the truck and do the following procedure these video's showed:

1. Turn truck to ON but do not start
2. Depress the throttle to the floor and then push DOWN on the parking brake button down by your left knee, keep them both depressed and then
3. While still keeping the throttle pedal down and Park brake button DOWN, turn the key off for 2-3 seconds and then turn it back on (don't start), all the time keeping the throttle depressed to the floor and parking brake button DOWN. In 5-10 seconds, your display should flash and a red backlit message box comes up and says "Brake Maint Mode ON" with a okay button but you don't have to click okay-then you should be able to turn the key off and start to work on the vehicle.

THIS DID NOT WORK ON THE 2024! I tried this 2-3 times and went and re-watched 2 video's and confirmed I was doing it per the video instructions, so---

I get online and start searching for 2024 ONLY and come across a video a guy shot and said that he has seen on various FORD vehicles, FORD changed the software to add a Brake pedal depress to the above sequence to put the vehicle in Brake Maint Mode.
So now I try this procedure (AND IT WORKED):

1. Turn truck to ON but do not start
2. Depress the throttle to the floor and then push DOWN on the parking brake button down by your left knee, keep them depressed and then
3. While still keeping the throttle pedal down and Park brake button DOWN, THEN WHILE STILL HOLDING THE THROTTLE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND PARK BRAKE PUSHED DOWN, TAKE YOUR LEFT FOOT AND DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY HARD for 2 seconds, then let off the brake but keep the throttle pedal to the floor and park brake button DOWN and THEN
turn the key off for 2-3 seconds and then turn it back on (don't start), all the time keeping the throttle pedal depressed to the floor and parking brake button DOWN. In 5-10 seconds, your display should flash and a red backlit message box comes up and says "Brake Maint Mode ON" with a okay button but you don't have to click okay-then you should be able to turn the key off, release the throttle pedal and parking brake button and start to work on the vehicle.

THIS WORKED-My display flashed after I tuned the key off then back on and in about 5ish seconds your display will flash and you'll see the dialog box that say Brake Maint Mode On with a Okay button, and again, you don't have to click the okay button. At this point you can release the pedal and park brake button and turn the key off.

After you turn the key off and shut the door, just open the door and look at the dash, you'll see the box come up and say Brake Maint Mode ON, it will do that every time you open the door until you take the truck OUT of Maint Mode.

Now you can change pads, swap calipers, do a manual bleed like the old days if you want.

When all the work is done, to take the truck out of Maint Mode, you do the same process above (the one with adding the brake pedal depress I mean) ONLY INSTEAD OF PUSHING THE PARKING BRAKE BUTTON DOWN, YOU LIFT IT UP AND HOLD. So do the same process Only pull up on the park brake button vice push it DOWN.

Once the truck comes out of Maint mode, you hear the brakes cycle as the system is setting the air gap etc., that will confirm you are out of Maint Mode as well.

One thing to remember, when you are putting the truck into Maint Mode, the part where you hit the brake pedal, it is hard and normal feel (as it should be) but when you take the truck out of Maint Mode, the brake pedal might be soft and go all the way down. The first time I tried it, I didn't have enough pressure in the system to set the bit, so I repeated the release process and the second time, I had some pedal feel so it didn't go all the way to the floor but I depressed it till it was hard and stopped, released it and then the second try was successful. Next time I do this, I will just pump the pedal a few times to get the feel back and then run the take it out process.

Summary, gotta add a brake depression to the procedure before you roll the key on and off for both going in and out of Maint Mode.

Hopefully this will save you a lot of frustration and wondering WTF is going on?

THANKS FORD, put this stuff in the damn manual-

You can also put the truck in Maint Mode using FORSCAN or if you have a good active scanner, they can do this too but I wanted to use the built in routine and glad I figured it out.

This is a sign to me that vehicles are getting too complicated.

Thank you so much for the detailed instruction! Which big brake kit did you go with?

I understand your frustration, but it is not just FORD, my Mercedes SUV was similar IRT to maint and such, various modes and routine/processes to work on the vehicle. That's the problem with all of this modern capability, it makes the cars so much more complex.

What happened to the days of a stuck drum or a spring flying across the shop being the biggest frustrations during a brake job?

Thanks for the knowledge. I came across a video and another forum that mentioned ford made it more difficult to change brake fluid for models 21 and up. Rather than doing it the old fashioned and conventional way- (bleeding the nipple with a tube while depressing the brake till clear)- ford now requires you to have a pressure pump system and an FDRS software to do a simple fluid change without throwing up a bunch of codes and allow it to fully drain the ABS system. Here’s the video of a tech mentioning it:

Can anyone confirm that that’s not the case and putting it in brake service mode and bleeding normally doesn’t cause any issues. Would be a shame for it to be a dealer only service and kinda feels like indirect robbery on fords part to those who work on cars themselves to save money.

Ya gotta hand it to Ford, they really enjoy making shit products to keep their dealer service departments busy.
