A few days ago, my 2022 F150 XLT Blackout edition's rear axle blew up on an off ramp, and the truck and my trailer started drifting backwards down the hill (even though the shifter was in park). Was able to drive it SLOWLY to the dealer (about a mile away) in 4-wheel drive. The technician there said, "3rd one this week". Unfortunately for me- the powertrain warranty only goes to 60,000 miles, and I am at 67,000 miles. According to the dealer tech, there is a recall for certain late model Ford trucks for this very same problem. The tech asked Ford if this could be covered by warranty, but they said no at this time. It's only $1,200.00 but hoping Ford will include my vehicle in a future recall so that I can get my money back.

Like to see more details on an exploded rear axle. You mean the differential?

The right rear axle..., which is why I could drive it in 4-wheel drive.

Could you post the work description and part #s after you get the truck back? Very interested to see what was involved.

Forgot to ask. Is this a standard axle or the HD that is part of the Max Tow package?

Definitely try and get the recall information that the tech talked about. Also report it to NHTSA as a safety related event.

Was there damage to the differential case? If so, pics?

So is it possible that if the Max Tow axle bolt broke, and you never discovered it, and just went on for many thousands of miles......

Couldn't that axle eventually move away from or toward the pumpkin enough to "explode", so to speak, the differential?
I mean that bolt absolutely locates the axle in the hub. Regardless of how tight the spline mating might be, surely there's a purpose to hold that location.

Axles just don't "blow up." The design elements are so well known. This had to be a manufacturing defect. If it did have that fractured bolt, a misalignment would eventually occur as stress was moved around with fewer bolts to carry the load... and there you are: a failure... The alignment ot gears in the differential is critical...
