10R80 Torque Converter “shutter “?

My brother has a 2020 F150 STX 4x4 5.0 Coyote. He has been experiencing Shuttering, many trips to the dealership and they concluded it was the fuel injectors, all 8 were replaced, still not resolved. Next visit, they said it was the Torque Converter, they ordered and installed, still not resolved. All this was covered under Premium Warranty. He has now been told by an outstanding Ford Mechanic to drive it in “Sport mode” at all times, he says Ford transmission programming has it set up to upshift sooner than it needs in hopes of gaining extra MPG. Has anyone experienced this and or tried the Sport Mode at all times?

My wife's 2020 Expedition with the 3.5L EcoBoost did that. It also would shift hard. At 30K miles they replaced the valve body and a solenoid in the transmission. They said there was a TSB out for this problem.

Does driving in Sport mode solve the issue?

There is a known shudder between the 3-5 shift, because of fuel economy programming. Sport mode shifts 3-4-5 and the shudder doesn't occur.

It is characteristic of the truck, if this is what your shudder is.

Stupid suggestion but try it. Run the tank empty and throw a tank of 93 in.

This is a known issue. There are several threads on this forum that address it. Try searching for this thread "Transmission Shudder" as a start for more info. In my case, premium fuel helped but did not eliminate the shudder.

If you drive in sport mode all the time your gas mileage will suffer. It won’t hurt anything but I doubt that is your problem.

Wasn't aware PB has the 10 speed transmission. I do think programming on Gen 14 has helped. I saw numerous threads complaining about the 10 speed and I've not had it act weird on me once. I confused it with some stop and go oddball traffic but that has been my only rough shift in frequent city driving.

Yes the PB has a hybridized 10R80 with a longer bell housing for the electric traction motor to fit in there. I noticed the 1st to 3rd fuel saving shift at first but I’m pretty blind to it now lol.

Old six speed had plenty of shifting issues early in life too. I had to get an update on my 2011 to fix the slamming into 2nd gear so skip over it. I think the 10 does the same for a few gears.

It is a gen14 issue too but not as pronounced. My 23 3.5L EcoBoost had a similar problem. When my wife's was repaired I asked about my transmission shifting hard, like it is dropping into gear, and other subtle but annoying shifts. They said the same TSB covered the 2023 that covered my wife's 2020. They didn't replace anything but they did clean the valve body and reprogrammed the transmission. It is so smooth between shifts now. I was not that worried before with the shifting, just figured that it was normal for the transmission. After they serviced the transmission; wow, what a difference.

I don't mind the occasional hard shifts too much, but was wondering is it bad for transmission longevity in any way?

Also, is reprogramming/resetting the transmission something we can do on our own? Or is it a dealer service only?

What TSB # are you referring to if I can ask? TIA
