I noticed lots of people have the same issue, the rear differential , axles etc have rust right from new. I used roll on bedliner stuff on the entire frame of my cargo trailer and it worked awesome, still no chips or rust! Was just wondering if anyone has cleaned up the rust and tried the bedliner stuff on their trucks?? I am not sure how much heat the diff produces and how much heat the bedliner stuff can endure. I read where some were using appliance enamel but it has to be reapplied as it does not last that long . Thanks :)

I think it would be fine. May just make the differential covers harder to remove when its time to replace the gear oil. If you go around them with a razor blade first it should be similar though. Additionally, just make sure to mask off the rotors and any nearby electrical connectors first.

That is a very good point about cutting around the cover for future removal, thanks!!!

fwiw there could be a situation where water and salt finds a way behind the coating and eats the frame, and there may be no visual indicator it's happening until it's flaking apart.

the annual sticky oil application avoids this but it's terrible recurring messy work.

Not only a PITA when it comes to maintenance, bed-liner will reduce the rate of heat transfer from the differential to surrounding air. (n)

I've always heard Bedliner has the possibility of trapping moisture and actually causing more problems than it is worth. Also have to think about things like vents on diff's, fluid changes and on going maintenance.

I hate that I have surface rust on the underside of my $80k truck, but I dont think spraying /w LineX is the solution.

Yeah, I would only use it on the cast parts. I use Blaster Surface Shield (similar to Fluid Film) for my frame, but it is both a mess to apply and a mess if you ever need to work in surrounding areas as you mentioned. It does do a good job of keeping things rust free though...

That's another reason why I was asking as i know the diff puts out some heat...lots of heat at times. Thanks for your input!

I think so and if it needs a re-coat then an $8 can from WalMart and its like new again. I’ve used it on suspension parts on other cars and it seams to last but I go OCD on the prep work too. 😉
