I drove on a snapped axle bolt for at least a month. If the bolt head is tumbling around inside the wheel, it makes a racket. After a while I started getting a grindy squeal under light braking, similar to worn out pads.
After having the axles replaced (with the same defective axles) it's back...
fwiw there could be a situation where water and salt finds a way behind the coating and eats the frame, and there may be no visual indicator it's happening until it's flaking apart.
the annual sticky oil application avoids this but it's terrible recurring messy work.
FWIW I had a bunch of failures applying this update manually. Eventually it worked, and I don't know why. Here's some of the permutations I did:
- Charge and recharge and recharge the main 12V battery again with a trickle charger
- BMS resets
- Put both of my key fobs in a faraday box
- Run the...
Looks like the new OEM axles are the same as the Dorman axles - nut on the end vs. spindly little bolt.
EDIT: pic from Ford's recall note to dealers on the new axle design.
Well, then I chose poorly since I don't tow. And I stand corrected.
But, these axles are still FUBAR, which is lame because I really like my truck otherwise. And it's also lame that Ford created a fictitious solution date of 12/22 for NHTSA when no actual solution has ever been implemented...
I submitted a complaint in their (NHTSA) online system, and I got a call back maybe 2 days later. The gentleman I spoke with briefly wasn't aware that all Hybrid trucks got the HD axle, said my VIN didn't indicate the HD axle spec or something. He said he'd look into it, and that was that...
I called Ford's recall help line to ask if they'd consider extending the scope of 23S65 given that nothing magic actually happened after December 2022. I got escalated and a call back. The lady who eventually called was borderline hostile, said Ford won't do anything beyond what the recall says...
That's just the thing: nothing changed. New trucks have the same issue. The 23S65 recall build date criteria is nonsense. Here's my 2/23 build's broken bolt.
I just got mine done at the dealer last week and am assuming I got the crappy parts... and I have some high quality McMaster Carr bolts I'm ready to swap in. Would love to know if it's visually obvious what differentiates the official fix.
There could be some confusion on what you're seeing on the display. If you're in generator mode and seeing "300W," that's the power draw on the PPoB system, it's not a state of charge for the hybrid battery. If your 300W load drops to zero, you may have a ground fault somewhere that is making...
Welcome to the (2023) club. File a complaint with NHTSA, Ford won't expand the recall voluntarily and the build date range criteria they've got in the recall is utter nonsense.
I ubered home on my own nickel after learning they "don't do loaners." They were much more helpful when I was buying their brand new Platty off the lot.
Where is this epic dealership you found? Could be worth a road trip if the axle holds ?♂️
Mine was prior to 18,000 FWIW.
The icing on the cake is all of the Ford dealers' service departments in my area are almost criminally incompetent. I had it at my dealer, they said 1-2 day turnaround... it sat for 9 days, while they lied about status updates and performed no service of any kind...
Redesigned parts are supposed to be hitting the streets 1Q25, what happens when i break my next bolt in late 2025? I get another serving of the garbage axles and earlier builds are getting the good ones?
Hey all, I have a 2023 Powerboost with a broken axle bolt. My VIN is not covered by the recall, my build date was 2/6/23.
I would very much like for Ford to expand their recall coverage as I don't want a like-for-like replacement with another defective axle. I called their recall support line...
i got a call back from Ford, wildly unhelpful.
the lady told me that Ford is either unwilling or unable of taking care of this issue on their end and recommended I contact NHTSA instead. so I did. now i'm waiting on that.
i guess Ford hasn't heard of voluntary recalls... or customer...
Got the truck back. Looks like build date is Feb 2023, so the 23S65 recall doesn't cover me... which is interesting.
edit: I called Ford's recall support number and opened a case. Will report back with details as i get them.
