The phantom updates are getting old! Everyday for the last couple of weeks, the update icon shows up. After a few start cycles it goes off. Last update was sept 24. It’s getting old getting “excited” about a new update only to be let down and disappointed!! lol… I’m done whining now!?

The phantom updates have been plaguing us for a long time. One of the past updates was supposed to correct this. I get them all the time and I have stopped getting my hopes up.

The fall APIM update might correct it if we are lucky. I rarely see phantom updates but I know many will see them constantly.

I've only had this happen once in my 2023.

I found that turning off scheduled updates prevented the phantom notification from coming back.

I’ve tried everything and get phantom updates daily. They’re really starting to piss me off

I suppose that could be partially true. I always keep auto updates turned off.
I still only get phantom updates at Walmart. ?

I can always count on them when I go to Meijer. Now I get them just about anywhere. ?

I haven't had an update since 2023, at least you get updates. Haha
Phantom updates if I recall correctly started with 6.x somewhere in there. I thought everyone was crazy on here until it started happening to me too.

I was getting phantom update notifications since earlier this year. I received OTA 10.1.1 in September and phantom updates have now completely disappeared. 10.1.1 is a TCU or telecommunications module update, you will receive shortly after getting 10.1.0 which was an APIM update bringing your SYNC version to 24127. The Phantom problem lays in the TCU and 10.1.1 will correct the issue.

I would expect it to be the opposite and be in the APIM software. ??‍♂

No, that's not how it works, the TCU communicates with the Ford cloud and passes information to the GWM module. The GWM module is like a router, it holds the update in its memory and sends the update to the correct module for which the update is intended. When the GWM is notified of an inbound OTA via the TCU it sets up the update for install. during this process the APIM is sent information regarding the status of the OTA, thus bringing up the notification "bell" icon on your SYNC screen. The notification button then allows you to select a course of action regarding the installation of the OTA. In the case of the "Phantom update" the TCU was sending a false signal to the GWM making it think an OTA had arrived. Thus, triggering the notification icon on your SYNC screen.

What determines who and when an update occurs OTA? It’s strange to me that everyone doesn’t receive them at the same time, but instead they seem greatly spread out over time. Some say they never get them. What is the key factor in someone getting the update?
