Spare Tire thoughts

There are F150 oem 20" rims on eBay. I'm considering purchase a 20" rim, save one of decent stock tire for spare tire setup.

Ditto - I did this so now I have a 20" OEM wheel - (with a used Hankook on it) This is way better than the 500 mile tire and way better wheel.

The factory 20" Alloy wheel fits under there just fine.

For those who got a matching spare did you also make sure the wheel had the same offset as the other four? I've been considering going to a matching spare but not sure if its worth the expense to also get a matching wheel. I have the Method 316 18" +18 wheels.

Agreed with leave it. Just make sure it has air and rotate it in such a way that you can check it periodically.

Did you guys check the owner's manual and warnings?!?! I just got my 2024 Lariat FX4 with 20" wheels and the 18" temporary all-terrain spare. The manual said 2WD only and do not exceed 70 mph. I will be off-road up in the mountains, hours from the nearest town. I have to have a true full-size spare I can rely on. My only concern is, will a stock Alu rim have a big enough center hole for the flange on the end of the spare tire winch to fit through. My RAM did not. I will have to check when I get back home from this trip. Only had the truck 7 days and I will pass over 3,000 miles when I get back home tomorrow.

My only concern with a fancy matching wheel is a spare is easy to steal. The original temp wheel/tire is an unlikely target for thieves. I like that.

Anyone put a 255/80/17 on the spare tire rim? Trying to get a more permanent 33 inch on the spare rim.

You will not have to worry about a fancy spare. There is no way a matching 20" wheel is compatible with the spare tire hoist I have on my new truck. The flange that goes through the center hole in the wheel is too large to fit through the smaller, 2.25" hole in a matching 20" wheel. I have 3 weeks to solve this one.

Oh, does anyone have a smaller flange than what came on my truck? I've looked at every spare tire on every new 23/24 truck I looked. There was little consistency in the spare tire configuration. I thought I saw a few trucks with a small flange.

Just bought a new 2024 f150 with FX4 package. It came with 20 inch wheels. I got under the truck yesterday and noticed the spare tire says for temporary use only. It is close in diameter. Would this great community think I would be better off getting an additional 20 inch matching wheel or just leave it as is

I am a 5-wheel rotation believer so...

Not quite sure I understand what you’re getting at here. All OEM wheels, spare or not, are hub-centric which means they will all have the same 87.1mm center bore. So they would all be compatible with the spare tire hoist under the bed.

I don’t understand what all the hoopla is about.

As spare as a spare, who gives a shit if it doesn’t match the your other four. So it is a limited use tire or a different size. It’s there to do one thing…..get me to tire store. I either get a new tire or get the flat repaired.

Your perspective may work if you have paved roads between you and the tire shop when you need to use the spare and 4WD is not needed to get through snow conditions.

If I am off-road and need 4WD to get 60 miles back to paved roads, then the spare Ford delivered with my car is a liability.

I just added a tire to my spare rim with the same OD as what’s on my 22” wheel set. It’s not rocket science, y’all.

I have a 5th wheel and tire for all my vehicles. I just rotate it every rotation. My 22 Explorer is the only vehicle that I didnt buy an extra full size spare because there was no room for it.

I can understand your point. Yeah, when I lived in Montana and went hunting for a week to a week and a half every year in the mountains, I carried a second spare

I wouldn’t say the factory spare tire is a liability. It’s a tire provided to operate within the intended parameters of the truck.

First, I want to thank everyone who has posted on here. I do go off-road some (hunting, etc) and also tow a trailer at least a few times a quarter. Here was my solution to this incase anyone else is looking for one:

I purchased a 20" steel wheel (it is a factory Ford spare out of a Navigator), it was like $75 at the salvage yard here. I then got online and found a "cheap" A/T tire to have mounted on that spare in the same 275/60r20 size as the factory tires (it was around $100 for the tire and $20 to mount and balance it). So all in I am at $200. I do understand I wont be able to do a 5 tire rotation, and maybe I wont ever need the spare, but I like the piece of mind knowing that my spare is not a temporary spare and if needed I can use it in 4wd to get out of somewhere.
