I had to use my spare today and it says temporary use only. I've only seen it say that on donut spares. How temporary are we talking about. I mean I'm definitely no leaving it on for years or nothing but it will stay on until I get my new one I ordered. My question is would I do better buying a regular tire to put on the spares rim or is there any real difference from the spare and a regular tire.

You got Forded with cheap rubber; depending on the 4x4 system, you can drive a ways on a full size non matching spare.

Some of the temporary use only tires also have speed or payload limitations too. So check the sidewall specs.

Best off to get a matching wheel/tire combo and either leave it at home or replace the spare with it if your tire size allows.

There’s a few existing threads on the matter which elaborate further.

Good luck!

See I figured it was something with the rubber or something with tire. It's an 18" rim so I'll prolly just get the matching size to mine and get put on the spares rim. Just a little more peace of mind having a regular tire for if and when I need it.
I kind of browsed around to see any spare threads but didnt jump out at me but I'll have to look again when I get more time.
Thanks

I had to use my spare... Twice within a month... :-( it is a full up tire but is a 17" while my tires are 18". Although not a "donut" type spare, it is the wrong size, using two different size tires on a driven axle is bad for the differential. You can do it for awhile and keep speeds moderate, don't go out on an Interstate, don't carry a heavy load... you get the idea. If someone has a donut type spare that should only go for maybe 50 miles... A full up tire can go far longer, but the differential will be ginding away.

I didnt want to deal with the wondering, so for me, I got a perfect matching tire and rim to slap on in case I ever needed to change. Now Im running 34's basically, but easier to know I have another brand new Nitto I can throw on.
So me, Id get a good tire and slap on there.

I checked the LT tire option when I ordered my 22 RCSB, so i got 5 of the same tire. Spare is same General Grabber.

So....cant help.

I have never seen a full spare labeled temp use only.

I tossed my spare and bought a full size copy of my other 4 wheels/tires. If I'm in a situation where I have no backup left, I don't want the chance of failure to automatically increase due to a cheapo spare tire that lived next to an exhaust pipe all its life.

I noticed mine this morning looking at the parking brake harness. Maxxis 18" something. I'll have to check again and do the math to see if the outer diameter is approx. the same.

275/60R20 = 838mm diameter

270/70R18 = 835.2mm diameter

Radius difference of 1.4mm

Air pressure error range right there. That will do and save me buying a 20" rim. Lighter too most likely.

Now just to check what my spare 18" rim has for a tire...I know what it needs to be now.
