Been trying to explain for a couple of years that the porky-ness of the Powerboost is NOT from the Hybrid Battery. It couldn't possibly be. 1.5KWH battery is teeny tiny. So tiny that it's both fascinating and puzzling that it can be leveraged so successfully.

Keep in mind that enclosure is not just the battery cells/modules. About 50% of it is the battery management hardware and the HVJB/contacts. Along with the battery thermal management.

I wish I was nerdy enough to mess with such things. I would love to do something with a few of these.

I know the electric motor can't do much on the PB. The selling point is the lengthy idling on battery and generator capability. If they had increased battery capacity the electric might be more useful for driving. Could fit several of those on a truck body where the other hybrid don't have the space.

How many did you buy to convert your PB to an EV?
1.5kWh is poo. My mach-e has a 97kWh battery in it.

We'll put this into a little more clear perspective. I want everyone to picture your H7 battery under the hood. Okay, now if you were to dump out its guts and replace it with a NMC lithium chemistry, that'd be about 4 kWh worth of energy. Now imagine you just slice off a little 2.5" thick piece off of the bottom of the H7 battery and you've got the actual physical size of the PB's batt.

12" x 6" x 2.5" --- basically a little larger than a 1' long 2x6 with a 1x6 sitting atop it.

If I were to play with getting more from the PB, it'd involve grabbing one of ford's 15kWh batts, the HV electronics from a lighting, one of rivian's little 200hp electric motors attached to the transfer case while using the standard 10R80, and swapping the OBISG for a 15kW 400v unit that replaces the crank pulley. It'd be soo much easier if ford just went ahead and built that for us though :ROFLMAO:

hmm, what a project!

Start with two banks of relays, so that at any moment, you can put either exactly one into the car circuit, or briefly add multiples in parallel under load. The second bank is to allow plugin charging.

Then retain a law firm to fend off Ford's lawyers, and another to keep the fire department away.

At this point, you're ready to start reprogramming so that it doesn't kick on the engine automatically at certain speeds, instead relying on, to it, the impossibly high availability of current . . .

hmm, might be easier to just put a double thrown relay onto a lightning to trick it into taking power from a plug . . . just tell the battery system that it's regenerative braking going down an 8% gram for three or four thousand miles . . .

?

Guys calls me and said hey I can have 2 for price of one, if I pick them up on tax free zone near dfw airport.
Apparently a start up had ordered a few thousand of these pricey bits, they were to build electric small vehicles for a city near here. Then funding fell through. So this tax zone holding place at dfw had them in a climate controlled area. So we drove 2hrs saved 700 bucks

That's exactly the problem. $500 sounds like such a bargain. And it IS if you own a (the) vehicle that could use the whole assembly. But trying to use it for its value as a battery/energy storage device? 1.5KWH is only 1.5KWH.

As a Tesla wall, it's tiny.
As an EV energy source, it's tiny.

In my Mach-E, it would get me about 4.5-5 miles. (from 100%SOC to 0)
And we know in a Powerboost it's good for exactly what the existing HV battery is since it's the same size. Around 10-18 minutes of running the vehicle in Park. (from 63%SOC to 42%)

If it were the Powerboost version, I'd buy a few.
Then recoup the expense at some time in the future by rescuing a Powerbooster that's caught out of warranty.
I don't know what the Powerboost battery assembly will cost 5 or 6 years from now when the 2021's are beyond 8/100k, but I bet it's well past $500
