2024 order or wait

Just spoke with the dealer, ordered a 24 Lariat powerboost on May 20th.
They contacted Ford.
Not scheduled to be built yet.
Might not be delivered till the fall.
Thinking just cancel and order it 2025.
Any advice.

depends on when you need a truck... by the time you take delivery of the 24 there should be lots of nice incentives but chances of that on 25 are slim...

I recently traded my Tundra for a 24 XLT, FX4 , black appearance, tow/haul, 3.55 electronic rear axle, and like it a lot so far. Trailer towing 10,400 lbs, 1808 lbs. should tow my 5500 lbs, 450 hitch lbs, 22 foot trailer real good. I have to move fast to trade my Tundra. Thinking, in 1-2 years might order a newer F150 or look for a deal on a loaded one sitting on a lot. Might consider the Max Tow 3.55 diff / axle, if Ford has resolved any open recalls on “sheared bolts”.

At this point, I'm of the opinion that you should just wait a bit to order a 2025.

At this point, I'm of the opinion that you should just wait a bit to order a 2025.
Again, I ordered my 2024 shortly after the order banks opened in September 2023. It was never scheduled. I ended up buying off a lot in June. Point is, there is no guarantee that if you wait for a 2025 that you won't wait just as long or longer than you would wait for your 2024. Here are the things I know for certain:

1) They WILL raise prices for 2025 (they always do);
2) There will be no significant changes for 2025 (2024 was the refresh year)

Things I suspect will happen:

Ford will continue to be plagued by nagging constraints and delays in the build process.

2024s will be incentivized as we get closer to year end. 2025 will likely have no incentives until at least mid-year 2025.

Now if you wait you will get the benefit of having a "newer" truck, which will help on resale. Question is back to those price increases/incentives. Does the savings of getting a 2024 offset this effect in resale. I suspect that it would. My take, wait it out and take the order or do what I did and find your truck on a lot.

Good point, I probably should have been more specific.

If you're interested in a XL, STX, XLT, or maybe the Lariat, I would either order a 2024 or opt for something in inventory. There's plenty of inventory for those trims (especially XLT) that you would have a higher chance of finding exactly what you want.

If it's a higher trim, ie. King Ranch or Platinum, and a specific configuration, then I would just wait for the 2025 at this point. I think with the current inventory levels of the higher trims, there is a far lower chance of those trims having incentives towards the end of the year. Heck, there appears to be more inventory of Raptors than there are of the Platinum.

Also, I'm not sure why Ford continues to have massive issues with getting their retail orders through the production process. This is not the case with GM. At this point, if a GM dealer has allocation (which most of them do), your ordered vehicle will be delivered within 4 months.

Ford's continued production delays (people waiting 6+ months for a 2024) pushed the SO and myself to test drive GMC's Sierra 1500 and Yukon XL with the Duramax powertrain. We were impressed and the dealership told us they had plenty of allocations.

I'd wait and order a 25 but I'd still keep an eye out just in case something pops up at you local dealer

Wow, a lot good points.
It's a $500 refundable deposit.
Going to wait, see what happens end of August.
Keep on looking on dealer lots.

The flaw in the wait for a 2025 argument is simple: it rests on the assumption that the wait for a 2025 from order to delivery will somehow be less than in 2024. It might be. What if it isn't? What if you were like me and got your order in right after the order banks opened and you are still sitting there on June 1, 2025 with no truck, no scheduling, no hope?

As the 2024 MY winds down, you at least know you will get your truck by the end of the year. Less than six months. Some might argue that it is possible Ford could roll the order into 2025. It is true, they could (very unlikely). If they did, you would be at the top of the list for 2025s and Ford while not doing price protection anymore usually hooks those guys up with a nice PCO.

I get the irritation that comes with getting your 2024 late in the year. It sucks. But that is just the way Ford is setting this up by delaying the start of the model years as late as they are. Hell - almost no one got a 2024 until March of 2024. That being said, you cancel and order a 2025, you have no assurance this will not happen again and you are on this forum asking if you should wait for a 2026 next summer. My advice: take the discounts this fall when your truck is delivered and enjoy it now. The only difference will be a digit. Hopefully you love it so much that you put so damn many miles on it no one will care what model year it was. :)

With all of the inventory on the lots, I'm waiting for deals to be had.

I'm waiting for Granger to offer a higher discount than 4%. They have a lot of inventory.

I ordered mine in Oct and I still do not have a scheduled build date. I have considered canceling and ordering a MY25 also, but I agree with everything @wessermgm has said. Also, the order banks for MY24 opened in September, but production didn't start until January. Even if you order a MY25 in August, I'm betting production won't start until at least December and it will be the same truck for more money. As frustrated as I am, I'm waiting it out unless I find something on a lot. The way this has gone for me and a few others, you'll likely get your truck before I do even tho you ordered 7 months after me!

But doesn’t this counter argument also assume that the buyer is not open to considering other makes/models as alternatives if Ford can’t deliver in a reasonable period of time?
