How many miles do you have on your powerboost? I am seeing reports where Mercedes and BMW are having massive failures with their hybrids at 100k miles with repair cost over $15k and no batteries in stock anywhere. Therefore it makes me wonder how long the batteries truly last in a Powerboost.

The PB HVB is not $15k, and Ford has been making pretty reliable hybrids for years. Fusion, Escape, and C-Max etc.

BMW and Mercedes repair costs (parts/labor) are inflated when compared to Ford.

Having owned 6 Mercedes I am well aware of the repair cost. The bigger issue is the lack of availability of batteries that leave a $100k car dead for months.

My other car is an S-Class so I frequent the Mercedes forums as well, and it’s well talked about to avoid the hybrid variants (of any generation, but especially the W221 chassis) like the plague. The early Mercedes/BMW hybrid models didn’t have a high take up rate, nothing close to an F150’s market saturation, and weren’t worth the cost of keeping parts supplied for them (especially bulky batteries).

The advantage of the Powerboost is the fact that there’s an F150 in every neighborhood in addition to Ford catering to fleets more than BMW/Mercedes. I’m sure these parts will be available for at least a decade and by then the aftermarket will likely come up with a solution like they did with Prius batteries. I thought I saw a post on this forum of someone who had their hybrid battery die and it was only a few grand to replace for the F150.

The Powerboost battery BARELY qualifies as a Hybrid battery in the context of the worry.

It's a 1.5 KWH battery. I'm surprised they got it up to ~280V with as few cells as there would be in a pack that small.
And, it's about as expensive as a set of KO2's in 35" ???

My only long term concern is that because it's so small, it gets hammered, relatively speaking. (drawn down/charged-up quickly) Probably why Ford is so conservative keeping it in the ~40-60% SOC?

Based on my experience with a 2006 Escape Hybrid. I agree that the traction battery is probably about half the size needed for the F-150. I said that to Ford a few months after taking delivery of my F-150. The battery charge-discharge levels I believe to be chosen for two reasons: 1st battery life is best when cycled in this region (remember they want to make it to the guarantee mileage); 2nd this is a relatively flat charge vs voltage region, thus making it easier to program. If Ford set this kind of battery up like they set up the NiMH battery in the Escape Hybrid, it'll have a good life. The Escape has about 450,000 miles and 19 years on it. Still going just fine. Ford was embarrassed on the Escpae Hybirds, they stocked up on replacement batteries only to see a far lower failure rate on those NiMH batteries than predicted. One can hope they are in the same ballpark with the F-150 Li-Ion battery...

I had a 2012 Escape Hybrid that I sold with 120k miles. It was still working fine; just needed a bigger car.

I still have a 2015 Fusion Energi with 135k miles that I recently passed down to my son. No issues. In fact, the battery still has 75% of its original capacity...9 years later and with close to 1500 full charge/discharge cycles.

I now have the 23 F-150 Powerboost. Clearly I'm not that concerned with the hybrid components.

I just had to replace the water pump on my 2017 Explorer at 110k for nearly $4000. I think people forget that even conventional repairs can be insanely expensive these days.

Thanks, that is good information - except for the $4k water pump. That is insane.

Fortunately the water pump in the 3.5L PB is belt driven and not as labor intensive to replace as the internal timing chain driven units in the 3.5L EB in some of the other Ford vehicles.

I'll be passing over 113000 this week on my 21 PB. Still runs as strong as the day I bought it. No battery issues yet, unless the O2 sensors are joined at the hip to the battery.

Only issue I had was a leak in the transfer case, but that was easily addressed.

167K on my 21 PB KR, only issues that I had/have is I had to replace the tone ring at 115K (extended warranty paid for that) and my OTA updates are way behind.

Knock on wood.
That is very encouraging! Maybe the secret is no updates!

Fantastic news and congratulations! As a bonus I researched and now know what a tone ring is and what purpose it serves ?
