Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but I couldn't find anything. My 22 PB has about 20k miles on it, and just recently has been starting using the "traditional" crank starter more and more, rather than firing up in electric mode and then switching to the belt starter. During the course of ownership I think i've only heard it about 2 times...and in the last 2 days its happened 4 times with no change in driving habits. No codes either. Any thoughts?

Read through my recent update but it seems to be all Audio related.

Is it easy to tell the difference between a belt start and a conventional start?

I’ve noticed this recently too. Maybe something to do with climate control when it’s warmer? I haven’t had an update for awhile.

Does it matter? Never really noticed in the 2 years of ownership if it sound different on startups or not. Truck starts, that’s all I care about.

Since the '24's no longer have the belt starter, I wonder how long until Ford determines that the conventional starter is unnecessary?

What? I must have completely missed that little nugget! Anything else of note? HVB double in size perhaps? Output voltage increased to 480V? Holy Cow Batman!

These are poor pictures because it is very tight but they clearly show that there is only one belt on the crank pully and it leads to the water pump (the pics also show that it is the only belt on the engine). The crank pully does have a spot for another belt (formerly used as the belt starter) but remains unused.

Not to hijack the thread but I'd kinda like to see Ford add an electric water pump and remove the belt. If they did that, they could put the pump anywhere they wanted. They could add it to the radiator or even the void behind the headlight and free up space. Like the fuel pump, the water pump doesn't need to be on the engine at all if it is electric. This could also eliminate the front main seal since you wouldn't need the crank to poke out of the front of the engine since there would be no need for a pully at all.

Of course Ford would need a new engine block for this to happen. Since their R&D team can't seem to get their "Pro Access Tailgate" into production, this will never happen.

I tried to get some pictures of my ‘22 for comparison but it is too soon after a twenty mile drive in the central Florida sun to stick my arm down in there lol. I could barely see evidence of any belt without getting in past the hoses and such.

Over 17,000 miles and she looks good with that clean Motorcraft filter in place. Just Damn!

It matters to me because for 2 years the truck has behaved one way, and now it doesn’t. To me this indicates either a failure of a system, or an update I’m not aware of and I’d like to know which.

Thanks! The pic I was able to take showed the little tensioner wheel above the oil filter for the BISG belt to ride on. @fatBatman has nothing there. Did Elon start working at Ford or something? Eliminating potential points of failure is brilliant. I remember when I first got mine and was asking questions about the BISG and we were going through schematics to prove the PB didn't actually use the generator function. I was disappointed because I thought perhaps it could act as an alternator/generator to provide ICE only operation in case of high voltage failure. Ahh, good times

I feel pretty confident that if your truck was suffering even the slightest failure of a fundamental component, you'd be getting codes.
That doesn't necessarily mean that it's easy to troubleshoot an issue, but the shear number of parameters under constant monitoring on these trucks is daunting.

I am curious how you are discerning so clearly between the bendix vs the BISG. At least from inside the cabin while driving. I ask because my truck starts so quickly with either method that it's tough to discern.
