I just got my latest Blackstone report back with my first Amsoil Signature drain. I wanted to compare it vs. the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum that I've run for a few cycles.

I decided on these two oil brands because they were the winner & runner up in the Project Farm trials from a couple of years back.

I'm not trying to convert anyone nor suggest that one of these oils will cure any ailments. There was some interest in distributing the results of this bake-off so here y'all go:

Pennzoil 5W-30 Ultra Platinum vs. Amsoil 5W-30 Signature

4076 miles on Pennzoil, 4844 on the Amsoil

Wear metals were about the same across the board with both oils. All pretty low.

Additives were consistently higher with the Amsoil vs. Pz, even with the slightly higher mileage on the Amsoil drain.
Would it make any difference? Probably not at the drain intervals that I run.

Amsoil is significantly more expensive to source. Is it better? The numbers say so. Is it worth it? Suppose it depends on the owner.

Now this is great, real world data! Viscosity and flash point are both marginally outside of desired range, but not concerningly so. Amsoil performed better all around.
I’ll agree though, not sure price for performance justifies Amsoil at these OCI.

I've said before... If your goal is to get to the next tradein... go for it... In my case I'm looking at well beyond that. I kept a family '92 Suburban for 30 years... I may not make it that far on my Powerboost... But I'm shooting for it and use AmsOil for that reason.

For the money? Pennzoil is the better choice. I can drive down the street to Advance Auto and buy it any time...always stocked. With the rebates that Pennzoil always runs, it is even cheaper. Just got my $25 rebate on the last OCI of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum I purchased. Amsoil is just too expensive.

4000 mile oil changes are a WASTE of these oils!!! easy 10K oils!! but ok---
You are correct if you are stating that the ADDITIVES in these oils will go 10K.

But I don't care for the fuel dilution that I've seen in these reports. That alone will mandate 5K changes irrespective of the oil that I use.

I agree with you. What is your drain procedure? How long do you run the engine before draining it?

I have seen another OCI Ecoboost discussion where the oil changer saw different results with regards to fuel dilution after draining the oil after a long enough drive to burn off the majority of fuel in the oil. I think this was on Bob's site. Any thoughts regarding this suggestion of procedure?

You might be right. I mostly do short runs under 10 miles, and perhaps once a week stretch her legs on the highway. I will consider this next time I do a test. thanks

Additionally, it's probably best to drain the oil after an average length drive for yourself versus a long one to eliminate or minimize the fuel dilution. You don't want your Blackstone results to be skewed. If your drives are short, 10 min or less, than you will have significantly more fuel dilution than a 200 mile a day interstate driving salesman. Also, climate and time of year will affect this. Minneapolis in Winter versus Phoenix are two different engine reaching operating temp graphs... just some additional thoughts... always a lot of opinions regarding this topic... ?

First of all, Amsoil is king, 2nd to none and along with their oil filters. As for price when you’re a member $16 per year, the quarts and filter are significantly cheaper. I’ve been a member for many years. Often they run member specials on other items as well. I run Amsoil Signature Series on all my vehicles, Ranger side by sides etc and have had outstanding results for years.
$11.89 per quart is cheap! And they’ve got package deals on oil along with their awesome filters and comes with free shipping. It’s a no brainer!

I’ve run Pennzoil Platinum in my 5.0 since my initial factory drain at 1,500 miles. I’ve been changing every 5,000 miles. For the price the Pennzoil Platinum is a good oil. It’s a group III but an odd group III since the base stock is made of natural gas. It has less impurities pre-refining than crude oil used by everyone else. But it must be classified as a group 3 since it’s not an ester or PAO base.

To me Amsoil isn’t worth the squeeze, if I owned a Boss 302 or Dark Horse that I was at the track with sure I’d spend the money as the engine would be up above 7,000 rpm much of its life. For road use it just doesn’t make much sense to run the group IV.
