I wonder how much of your improvement came from the new speakers. At $199 for the amp, I'm thinking about getting it and trying to add it myself to my completely stock B&O Unleashed.

From what I've read in this thread, there's a main power coming from under the hood, a key'd power coming from a fuse, and then just splicing the amp in before the L/R rear door speakers.
I suggest you do it. I amped my rear speakers in my 8 speaker B&O system and it's like a whole new beast.

So the word "improvement" is the sticky point...
- Quality, I am sure will go up with JLs over the factory Ford speakers, (no they are not B&O, in either the 8 or 18).
- Amplification will DEFINITELY increase with the amp and "yes" you can do it. It really is a pretty easy feat, Im just lazy or busy, or whatever excuse and just had my guy do it.

You will finally feel like you are in the middle of your music and with loud volume, not because you have faded 25\75 or removed your center speaker, but because the volume in the rear has increased dramatically and will even moreso with a better powered amp than my 75w RMS.

If you happen to 'blow' the Ford speakers, then get a new pair. Not alot of money, and they range from 'better than stock' to ultra, high, kick a__, quality and pricing.

Im willing to help with any Qs offline. Been talking with another and helping him with his project also.

Sounds good. I just ordered the amp with the $199 link above.

You're describing exactly what I'm looking for. With my '06 BMW and my wife's 21 Jeep GCL, I feel like the sound fills the cabin. With the truck, it sounds like almost all the sound comes from the center dash speaker. I know some people say that at a concert, the stage is in front of you. That's fine for a concert, but in a car, I just think the sound is better when it fills the space.

Did both your power and ground go all the way to the battery? Or did the ground simply go to the chassis somewhere near the amp?

He ran it to the battery although from a video I saw it looks like there is a grounding point near the B&O amp on that wall. His concern was the aluminum body and possibly not a good ground.

First off, welcome aboard. Glad to have you here... lots of good, friendly guys here.

So for clarification, I didnt do any of the install. I have an audio guy\friend that does all our work.
1. He had to run a remote to a fuse on the passenger side to have "auto-on" work.
2. I dont know which gauge he used for power, I can look at the truck here in a bit and see if there is any details\verbiage on the wiring.
3. So the limit I am seeing now is due to gain and 4v limits. My gain is set to about 30% as my inputs are at 4v. I admit I get confused on voltage to gain to power ampliflication stuff. Its my understanding that if I had an LS2i it would allow for a higher voltage input, which would allow me to increase my gain without distortion, which I think, would allow for more volume.... (feel free to clarify if I am wrong guys).
.... my other thought is that if I went with a more powerful amp, it would increase my RMS from 75w to 100w.
I have been talking offline with @clipperqb and he is looking at a 5 channel Kenwood to power his rear doors and an aftermarket sub. He has the B&O-8 so there has been a lot of discussion between us as I am only familiar with the B&O-18.
I am REALLY thinking about a 5 Channel also, throwing 6.5" cones where the 6.5" coax are now and placing a 1"-2" tweeter higher in the rear door. (closer to ear level).
The overall design of this system is really poor. I am by NO stretch an audiophile but to have 4- non-amped speakers in the back at foot level, with highbacked seats and center console walling them off, just makes no sense. I would prefer another 6.5' sub\deep mid down by the feet and a tweeter in this area somewhere...

Mr JJSnell,

Wow!

Thanks for the great and detailed response!

I spoke with Crutchfield about the "Auto on" feature, they weren't much help, only mentioned that it was possible.

I was able to download a manual from Sonic Electronics and got to reading it....

It seems like this amp supports 3 types of "auto on". I'm not the most knowledgable about these things, but from your description ( "He had to run a remote to a fuse on the passenger side to have "auto-on" work." ) and reading the manual I'm thinking that he tapped into one of the speaker outputs for the " DC offset blah blah " way to switch the amp on and off........But I'm not sure? Anybody?

Would you be able to maybe reach out to your installer and ask which method he used please?

The JL manual does state to use 8AWG and a 20 amp fuse wire if it will be the only amp on the circuit, but use 4AWG and a larger fuse if there will be more than one amp on the power circuit.

Anybody have any suggestions for the 2 way 6 1/2" speakers in the rear doors?

The Sonic link is Awesome! $199.99, incredible, thanks for that tip Tungy01!

Again, Thanks for this thread and all of your help!

I'm ready for this to happen!

If I did not answer before, yes he did use 8 gauge wire for the positive and negative to the battery. Sorry I actually looked at that the other day and I guess I forgot to respond about it. I will ask him what he connected the remote to in the fuse box. He's pretty responsive so I should have an answer sometime this weekend.

Edit: @GraniteState he responded, he ran it to "#2 Delayed Accessory Feed"

Thanks for the quick response!

#2 delayed accessory feed…perfect!

Who knew that even existed?…. I remember when cars had little glass tubes for fuses.

lol

Thanks again.

I’ll be running this under the backseat. It’s extremely impressive for 2 8’s. Takes up minimal space and the amp is built in. I have a keyloc ready to install in my 23 whenever I get around to it.

Looking forward to the end result. I appreciate the under seat storage but if this works out well I may have to forgo that.
I think I may have seen one of these install videos you will have to let us know if this speaker grill gets dented down to make space under the seat. I'm not sure if it was this speaker setup or not. Regardless it's going to be pretty awesome being JL....

I will update once installed. There is plenty of room for the grills as long as you don’t position it in the center of where both of them meet. I was blown away how well it sounded in my 2019. More than enough.
