Both engines are fixed is the good news! 5.0 got new pistons and piston rings in 2021, you can view my 4th gen tech spec thread in the 5.0L section. It’s largely a new engine for 2021+ not sharing much with previous iterations, lots of good reading there. The 3.5 EcoBoost has received totally new camphasers as well as new pistons from the HO. Neither are having teething issues in this gen.

I bought the 5.0L in my 2023, it would be quite an improvement over your 2013. The new 4th gen 5.0L V8 makes 30 foot pounds more torque at the same rpm as your 1st gen motor as well as 40 more horsepower. Here is a comparison between the 1st and 4th gen 5.0 with a race, not even close especially with the 10R80. For comparison sake:

2013 5.0L: 360 HP/380 lb ft @4,250

2021+5.0L: 400 HP/ 410 lb ft @4,250

As far as the 3.5 EcoBoost it’s also a great platform. Cheap to tune and crank crazy power out of. Gobs of low end torque. 500 lb ft @3,000 rpm.

3.5 EcoBoost: 400 HP/ 500 lb ft @3,000 rpm
You say cheep to tune. Who has a tune for these 3.5 eco's? I would definitely do.

I have the 7.2kw version of the Powerboost; It's the 302A flavor and I love it. I've had four 5.0's, '13, '17, '18, '22. All were good. I had a '20 with the 3.5, torque monster and smoked the 5.0. Had a '21 2.7, it was great on fuel and the low end, but lacked top end. I now have a '22 PowerBoost and I put it hands above the rest based on the utility alone.

appreciate the comments and the mention of declining prices even further after the '24s begin showing up. It may be best to ride it out a bit longer to see what it does. I'm in no rush with no issues out of my '13 outside of regular maintenance.

plenty happy with it
20mpg for my daily commuting (avg 20.5 over 33,000 mi)
Serious freeway flying at 80+ and that drops to about 17.5– but it is a brick.
No oil usage at all, zippy as hell, but that super long wheelbase really limits agility.
Transmission seems fine. Always in “normal” mode.
Still have the old truck for heavy dirty work.
First truck I have ever had with an automatic & power windows.
(still prefer a stick like the old truck and the hot rods)

Yup, no other OEM has any issues. None.
Only ford has recalls.

the only thing I need to carry spares of is about 4 gas cans lol

My olds? Spare alternator, water pump, transmission pan gasket, fuel pump, U-joints (2 of them), 3 packages of quickset cement, and the list goes on...

Not to nerd all over everyone, but I'd be interested to see the MTBF data ( 1/λ ) for each model variant. I'm guessing the higher level trims have more issues. I have had zero issues with my bare bones XLT, the truck is actually an absolute beast.

That being said, I'm talking about a failure being defined as impeding the principal operation of the unit. So maybe none of our problems (even the axle bolt stuff) is actually a failure?

I've had all of them; 2.7, 3.5 and now the 5.0 in my '22.

I have the H/O 3.5 in my Stealth Expedition currently too.

No consumption on my 5.0. I by far enjoy this engine the most of the bunch. I do really enjoy the H/O Expedition as well.

"FIXED". LOL Hardly.

The newer 5.0 ( some ~22-23) have block porosity and oil leaks around the oil filter housing causing a short block replacement. 5.0 just can't avoid oil problems.

If they had kept cylinder deactivation OUT of the current 5.0, it would have been an absolutely awesome engine. Its annoying as f&&&!
I really don't prefer to drive around in tow/haul mode all the time to defeat it.

In the market for a used '21-'22 Platinum.

Looking at a couple trucks in the 20-45k mile range - prices seem to be in the mid 50's. Good deal?
The new Platinum MSRP is in the mid 60s, I would think that with a little shopping you could get a new one for just a little bit more money say in the upper 50s. With new truck inventory increasing on dealer lots if you wait you might be able to get an even better deal on a new one especially if Ford ups the rebates.

I would suggest checking with Granger on the cost of new. Just a thought.

What dealer can you get a Platinum in the mid 60's? Heck, a 4x4 Crew 302A XLT 5.0 / 3.5 is listed at $62,500. What dealer you shoppin' ?

what Ford REBATES are you talkin' about?
