In the market for a used '21-'22 Platinum. I've done research for quite some time but wanted to get some fresh opinions on which year and motor to go with.
Current truck is a '13 FX2 5.0L. No issues out of it after 132k miles. Prices are starting to come down and i've got the itch to upgrade.

Is oil consumption still an issue with the 5.0L? Hit or miss?
The 3.5L - cam phasers/timing still a concern after some mileage?
What were the main options omitted in the '22 model year that a '21 would retain?

Looking at a couple trucks in the 20-45k mile range - prices seem to be in the mid 50's. Good deal?

Both engines are fixed is the good news! 5.0 got new pistons and piston rings in 2021, you can view my 4th gen tech spec thread in the 5.0L section. It’s largely a new engine for 2021+ not sharing much with previous iterations, lots of good reading there. The 3.5 EcoBoost has received totally new camphasers as well as new pistons from the HO. Neither are having teething issues in this gen.

I bought the 5.0L in my 2023, it would be quite an improvement over your 2013. The new 4th gen 5.0L V8 makes 30 foot pounds more torque at the same rpm as your 1st gen motor as well as 40 more horsepower. Here is a comparison between the 1st and 4th gen 5.0 with a race, not even close especially with the 10R80. For comparison sake:

2013 5.0L: 360 HP/380 lb ft @4,250

2021+5.0L: 400 HP/ 410 lb ft @4,250

As far as the 3.5 EcoBoost it’s also a great platform. Cheap to tune and crank crazy power out of. Gobs of low end torque. 500 lb ft @3,000 rpm.

3.5 EcoBoost: 400 HP/ 500 lb ft @3,000 rpm

Going into a 10spd is the gear ratio not as much of a factor? I will be changing to a taller/heavier wheel & tire setup and always wanted the lowest gear i could get.

3.55 currently in my '13 does OK with the current 285/55, but it is also OZ tuned.

users have reported cam phasers making noises on ecoboost start ups. YouTube has a couple of videos demonstrating 2021+ models.

I think with the 10R80 gearing being so low in 1 & 2 and with the newer engine carrying more power throughout the entire rev range it’s not as much of a consideration as it once was. My 5.0L/3.31 feels way stronger than my old 5.4L/3.73 combo in all situations including towing my 20’ boat.

Might as well throw the PowerBoost into the mix - what are signs to look out for with a used unit?

they all have their bad apples, but will agree it's sometimes tough to justify getting into a used truck with how reliable the '13 has been.

By all accounts; prices are set to go down even further for used vehicles and I’d imagine that when the 2024 refresh is on the streets, that higher trim 21-22s will be more competitively priced than today.

You’ve already patiently waited 120 months for a new truck. What’s another 6 months? That being said, historically, it’s the car dealerships’ job to sell vehicles and you might be able to find a better truck in the next few months than afterwards as it’s a sweet spot between late ‘21 and early’22 builds before the feature deletion took hold. Most trucks are driven and if you put low mileage on yours, it will be harder to find a used truck where it will make sense.

Before I ordered my 2021, I was actually looking at 2013 5.0 regular cab trucks to replace my 2006 Silverado and couldn’t find any that met my criteria without being preposterously overpriced.

With the Powerboost, many are super pleased with their truck but it seems like they are more problematic when it’s a dog and the gremlins have been harder to iron out than with a non hybrid truck that had QC issues. Some Powerboost owners have just gotten rid of their trucks because of all the hassle and time spent in dealerships. So be wary of the lowest mileage PB trucks and take them out on an extended test ride.

If I were looking at a Powerboost in RWD; I’d actually order a brand new XL with zero options other than the 7.2KW pro power inverter. The 2023 Xl Powerboost crew cab in RWD is $48,525 MSRP and will actually have a useable payload, unlike some of the higher trim PB trucks. Ford probably won’t raise the base PB too much for 2024, just so that they can have a low ‘starting at’ price.

Good luck!

In no way have I ever been a Ford fan boy. I go where the deals are at. Before this current 2022 F150 , I had a 2018 F150 and before that i had a 2014 Sierra and 2016 Sierra Denali. Am i denying Ford has issues ? Hell no offcourse your gonna have issues when your building 900K+ trucks a year . Its no excuse but that's a lot of trucks. To sit here and say Ford is the only one with issues , is a misstatement. I get your frustration , I'm frustrated too and not trying to take away from your hard earned money complaints. I'm currently waiting on a new transmission and new window motor switch myself :( . I'm also on all the GM/RAM forums as well as I just love trucks and i assure you they are all having their own issue.

Little new 5.0 vs 6.2 race for ya too ;), even the mighty GMC 6.2L breaks a sweat and can’t win out against these 14th gen F-150 trucks. The Ford powertrains have just gotten crazy good.
