I have a 2021 Single Cab F150 XLT. It’s a Saleen, so I’ve done some upgrades to the inside to make it more comfy. I did a center console install and I also replaced the small screen with the larger 12” screen from the newer f150s and higher trim levels. One thing that drives me nuts is the grainy resolution in the reverse camera. The radio and all associated cables are ford, with the exception of the harness supplied by the company that sold me the kit. The truck is a 2021 so I’m wondering, because of the supply shortage is it possible I got a SD camera in my tailgate instead of an HD one? Can I order an HD camera and replace? Or could it be the wiring in the harness for my screen upgrade?

There isnt a HD or non HD camera option from Ford. so if they used the factory camera, Its the right one.

Are you speaking of the regular reverse camera or the bed camera. The bed camera is analog and has next to no bandwidth so it is bad. The regular back up camera should be good though.

I didn't know fashion models drove STX's ;)
Haha, the regular mug pic didn’t fit she’s back to the truck. Didn’t think anyone spotted that :ROFLMAO:

I believe you'll find the 360 cam's cameras to be HD. The issue is that they're fisheye lenses and you're not seeing the entire view, but instead a cropped / corrected view of it. For instance if you zoom into the 'hitch view' you're only seeing ~360 lines of resolution. It'd need to be a 4k sensor to have the views you see appear to be HD. It's the same thing if you zoom into a small section of a photo -- it's basically a digital zoom thus appearing poor in quality. There's a view for the front camera that makes it look like 3 different views, but it's all 1 cam.

This is one of the disappointing points about ford's implementation of the system as a whole. Pretty much if you walk around the truck and see a camera, it can see you. As such there should be a much better viewing system in place than what they've got. That goes back to coding however and ford's own admission is that their coding team is bad. This should improve if the do in-fact implement the full android auto OS stack. Play with a modern GM for comparison, it's got a marginally better processor than our trucks, but running android OS its a MUCH better experience.

My main concern is that the image out of the backup camera when I put the truck in reverse just seems more grainy than I’d expect out of an HD camera.

If you want to see what a 480i image looks like, turn on the bed camera. So much more could be done with the backup view with 360 cams equipped. Default it should show a blended view of everything from the bed / cab back wall and back blending in the side cams rearward view. It's ford though.

I think the RCSB got crap cameras. My ex-2019 Ranger and wifes outback has far better back up cameras than my 22 RCSB.

I mean it does what it needs to, and i rarely look at when backing up.....but it is not a quality picture.
