Powerboost TSB Harsh 1-3 upshift

Hi there. New to the boards. The harsh 1-3 upshifts/ poor gas electric transition has been bugging me. Ran across this recent TSB to fix the problem. Wanted to get this out there for those that are effected by this.

Mine was built 4/22 and it was terrible until I reset my trans at 4k. Having this done this week for a permanent fix, while it's in for a powertrain rattle.

Thank you! I think this is what they did to my truck – not perfect, but an immediate and obvious improvement.

Hopefully they will come up with a fix for 5.0's built in June. The 1-3 shift is driving me nuts. Passengers keep thinking we were rear-ended.

Question - why cannot this be an over the air update? Second, the TSB is very ambiguous about the software upgrade, it doesn't list any software versions and talks more about resetting PCM. Anyone had this done and can attest it is a real software upgrade and not just a PCM reset?

Where did you get that information from? I need something to send to my dealer. I just got my truck back from them for these exact issues.

It specifically says “reprogram the PCM to the latest software”, so it doesn’t sound like just a reset to me. Wouldn’t make sense that there would be a certain cutoff date either if it was just a reset. They likely began shipping them with newer software by the date specified.

This is great news. The area dealerships wanted a minimum of 3 days to diagnose my hard shifting issue w/o a loaner to get to work. I will get them to try this and see if we can get it fixed.

My friend owns a shop and I was looking over TSBs because of this issue. As I find TSBs that are specific to the Powerboost I'll post them here.

I'm picking mine up from the shop tomorrow after having this done. It was shifting ok since I reset the trans tables a month ago, but before the reset, it was horrible to drive. This will hopefully make for a permanent fix.

Will let you guys know if it's any better than when I brought it in.

He probably means he erased his adaptive tables, effectively "resetting" it to brand new with no adaptive values. It's like starting over from day 1.

My Powerstroke has this harsh shift also and a sometimes violent clunk when it downshifts from 10th to 8th. These transmissions always seem to have shifting problems. Ford never could fix my 2018 transmission with the same diesel engine.

How did you reset it?

Using forscan I did the clear transmission tables procedeure. Wouldnt hurt to do all these at the same time though.

Let us know how it shifts after 2-3 days. The adaptive shift strategy will take about that long to build its tables. Very interested in the results.

Did you happen to take a snapshot of the module software versions to be able to tell which modules were updated during the reprogram?

Unfortunately I missed my window to get the truck this weekend. Someone was 40m late picking me up from the airport, and service won't be open until Monday morning...

I actually don't expect the truck to shift much better if at all because of the update - it was good when new and has been good after I reset the transmission tables for the last 800 miles. Will keep following up with my impressions though.

I'm assuming I have the same thing that dworley had here https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/hard-shift-1-to-3.2470/post-53818 - where the forscan reset was only a temporary fix, until he got the latest PCM software.
