I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. I asked my local dealer and he just rattled off random things that are in option packages that don't really help me.

Looking at 2022, with the black package, I can get Leather in an XLT.

What are the key differences between XLT, Lariat, and Platinum that are not available in options or add ons that would make me want to move to a Lariat or a Platinum? Does this question make sense? Like presumably the interior materials are different, is this described anywhere? What other non optioned things are different that you get when stepping up trims that I should consider when selecting a trim? Can someone help me with the quick overview?

I can't give you an overview but I can tell you I stepped up to a Lariat 502A because it's the lowest level with a heated steering wheel which can't be ordered as a separate add on. Sometimes it's as simple as that, you are locked in to a minimum model and option package to get one thing you really want/need.

Yeah that's what I'm talking about. Same with heated rear seats - you have those right? And you have to get 502A to get them its not stand alone?

I'm just wondering what I'll miss if I go 502A over 601A. having a hard time figuring that from the order guide

Cooled seats and heated second row seats, garage door opener integration, and BlueCruise are only available in the Lariat/Platinum. I believe the Platinum has the layflat seats optional as well (Not available on the Lariat as far as I know). Bigger/shinier wheels on the platinum, better seats on the Platinum (inlay on the headrests, different color material, probably full grain leather etc). I believe you also get the power running boards standard on the Platinum.

No leather in an XLT unless you go with the sport/black package. Leather quality/Interior is much nicer in a Platinum/KR/Limited than a Lariat. (Go from Leather trim, to leather seating area/Full trim) All depends on what your must have options are and what you want to pay. It is usually better to move up a trim line and go with no options rather than load a lower trim line up. A Platinum 701a will be better than a completely loaded lariat with 502a and Blue Cruise, Power Running boards, B&O, power tailgate etc. Both will be over 70K though.

Also some packaging is weird, you can't get front parking sensors on Lariat without ordering BlueCruise, but they are included on an XLT 302a. Heated Steering wheels (502a) and power folding mirrors are only on Lariat XLT/Lariat have way more color options that a Platinum. So you might be forced into a trim for a feature at your price point.

I'd only say if you're doing the Hybrid powertrain always get the 7.2kW generator option with it.

Not sure how much it costs on the 2022, but leather seats were something I wanted. Did not care much about the cooled seats, heated stearing wheel, memory seat positioning, power folding mirrors, or blue cruise (primarily because who knows when it will come out, or how well it will work) and the xlt with the 302a high package basically drives itself with lane assistance. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why people would want these things, just weren’t a big deal for me.

You can get katskins put in between 1200 to 2000 depending on who you go to. Which is what I found and it’s cheaper than the $5000 upgrade to lariat.

mall personal preference obviously.

If your want the transfer case with 4-auto, you had to go Lariat or higher in 2021.. not sure on the '22. If you want the gear selector / shifter on the column vs. center console, you have to go XLT IIRC.

Those were the conflicts I was having... I wanted leather, column shifter to avoid the folding shifter with the work surface, 4-auto, and a bunch of tech options.. I couldn't have leather, column shifter, and 4-auto.. had to sacrifice the column shifter and go lariat

Unfortunately right now I think your best option is to go through the MY22 order guide and see what’s different. It’s really hard to know what the ‘22 will bring without doing that until Ford fixes all their websites to catch up. You can see how many people have started to post their window stickers now that is working but I think the order guide will be an easier way to go.

The 2022 build and price is not up yet (I suppose they are waiting for MY23 to roll out...), but I believe what the @OP is asking is the basic difference, which you can see here (this is 2021)

2.7L EcoBoost® V6

How can an engine displacing just 2.7 liters deliver a robust 325 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque? Engineer it with the Ford port-fuel and direct-injection (PFDI) system with two injectors per cylinder, dual overhead cam design with variable intake/exhaust cam timing, plus twin intercooled turbochargers for on-demand power. And the available 2.7L EcoBoost® V6 with 10-speed transmission is strong. Its upper block and cylinders are made of the same high-strength compacted graphite iron used in the Super Duty® 6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel.

Horsepower and torque are independent attributes and may not be achieved simultaneously.

The salesman I dealt with does 100% of the ordering for the dealership I went through and he's been in that position for about 20 years. I trust what he has to say. When I placed my order back in October, he stated that higher trim levels that contain a feature as standard will be built faster than a lower trim level with that same feature added as an option. If you want your truck as fast as possible, get whatever trim contains the options you need rather than adding them to a lesser trim.

Wow the 4 auto thing is a really good point that I missed in looking at the trims...

I hate Ford's packaging. That's a hell of a jump in price point to get a heated wheel. I don't fault anyone for doing it, but damn, Ford!

I gotta say it's a bit bargain basement, but i ordered mine with the 301A package to save a couple of bucks and it's fantastic. Leather wrapped wheel, nice climate control, 8" screen is big enough for me (sometimes i even turn it off), good sound system. heres a pic

i went and spent a bit extra on some convenience things for myself, good tonneau cover, tailgate step, 5.0L V8, 4x4, side step bars

just food for thought, i paid 43 grand USD for the truck out the door including taxes and everything!!
