Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about swapping my stock tires (275/60R20) for a slightly larger set (275/65R20) on my 2023 F-150 PowerBoost.

I wouldn't go for an LT tire, I'd likely go with a P rated Nitto Terra Grappler G3 to keep the weight down.

I’m mainly wondering how much this change could impact the hybrid characteristics—things like:

  • Electric-only driving range
  • The smoothness of engine start/stop transitions
  • Regenerative braking effectiveness
  • Overall MPG
I know the larger diameter will affect the speedometer and gearing slightly, but I’m more concerned about whether it will noticeably throw off the hybrid system or the truck’s calibration.

Also, I don’t plan to level the truck anytime soon, so I’m curious if the extra unsprung weight and rolling resistance will make a significant difference, especially since I’d be running them on the stock suspension for a while.

Has anyone here made a similar size jump on a PowerBoost? Any feedback or lessons learned would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have 275/65 20 Recon Grapplers- they are the SL flavor, so only 47 pounds- or ~5 lbs. more than stock. Small hit in mpg (~1 mpg). No road noise increase-and actually a better ride in my opinion with the extra sidewall. I think if you go too much beyond that you will start seeing degradation to your mileage.

Don’t forget to recalibrate for the increased tire circumference - pretty easy to do in Forscan.

Lots more info on this in the “Aftermarket tires on stock wheels” thread on this forum.

Good luck with your decision!:

It'll be statistically irrelevant unless you go with some really heavy tires. The biggest MPG hit would be sticking the tires outside of the slipstream of the vehicle. Wheel design alone can impact mileage by about 5%, while protruding outside of the wheel wells can cost 10%, with wider heavier tires will cost another 2-10%

Levels/lifts will also affect your mpg more than a slightly heavier tire.

I made this exact change with the G3. No level or lift but that so coming soon. I have slight rub at full turn.
No noticeable change in electric only range.
No noticeable difference in the smoothness of engine start/stop.
No noticeable difference in Regen Braking.
You will notice a MPG hit and will depend on numerous factors such as highway/residential temp wind etc.

The change IMO does not throw off the Hybrid system. As for truck calibration again that is relative as to your exact ask in that respect.

Running 275/65R20 Nitto Recon Grapplers SL here. Just watch what wheels you go with. I went with Brinks. Mine is leveled and took a little hit but not bad. It is a truck and not a Prius.

This is true.

My only other experience in going larger tires with a lift/ level was with my only 2016 eco boost. I put 34 inch coopers on (18 inch wheel) and I noticed right off the bat it felt more sluggish, etc. Then got it leveled and thats when the MPGs took a hit.

I'm not worried about a mpg or so, but after driving this thing for 30,000 miles I'm kind of liking getting 600+ miles/ tank. So I don't want to lose too much either.

Very helpful, thanks! So are you liking the tires? Like, would you do it again?

My other choice are the Cooper Road + Trail AT in the stock size. Can get them for $225/ tire which is a great deal.

I do off road a tiny bit for work (construction sites) and then a few times/ year for hunting or fishing but thats it. I do about 26,000 miles/ year.

I'm sticking with the stock wheels for now. Honestly not sure how long I'm going to keep the truck. All depends on when my CPA tells me I need another large write-off, lol.

The 65's will be about an inch taller, so you can expect a little difference with your speeds if you don't have it calibrated right. Otherwise, I don't see why they would cause an issue especially if you're doing all four corners. Also if you don't want to calibrate, you'll probably just be off 2mph or so at 60.

What about 275/70/20??
I’ve yet to see anyone using or even trying this size.
