Anytime you lift or put larger tires on your mpg will take a hit
Not really my question. I know that the MPGs will suffer, I've sized up on previous trucks. I was more so talking about the characteristics of the hybrid.

Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about swapping my stock tires (275/60R20) for a slightly larger set (275/65R20) on my 2023 F-150 PowerBoost.

I wouldn't go for an LT tire, I'd likely go with a P rated Nitto Terra Grappler G3 to keep the weight down.

I’m mainly wondering how much this change could impact the hybrid characteristics—things like:

  • Electric-only driving range
  • The smoothness of engine start/stop transitions
  • Regenerative braking effectiveness
  • Overall MPG
I know the larger diameter will affect the speedometer and gearing slightly, but I’m more concerned about whether it will noticeably throw off the hybrid system or the truck’s calibration.

Also, I don’t plan to level the truck anytime soon, so I’m curious if the extra unsprung weight and rolling resistance will make a significant difference, especially since I’d be running them on the stock suspension for a while.

Has anyone here made a similar size jump on a PowerBoost? Any feedback or lessons learned would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Yes they work just Great. The ride might be just a little, little bit rougher they say, but I can't tell. I run 275/60/20 with M/T tires and they are Road One Cav. 10 Ply at 37 PSI in the front and 35 psi in the rear . On the road they're at 40 PSI. when they heat up ! I have ran that set up only in hunting season then swap back to A/T tires . I have ran that set up on 4 trucks 16,18, 20 FX4 and my 24 Tremor . Hope that helps.

Very cool, and no rubbing?

Does it mess with any of the co-pilot features? I'm assuming not.
I had a slight rub at full lock when backing up, but trimmed the wheel liners just a little to mitigate it.

No other issues….

I have put LT275/65R20 on my last two F150s and just did it again on my 2024. It is always the first thing I do to them cause it’s the cheapest mod in my opinion because it’s easy to find people selling take offs. Plus if you get the right one they are so much better in snow and rain and last longer. Plus the truck just looks better in my opinion even without a level or lift.
My 21 PB had the slight rub others have noticed but my new 2024 has no noticeable issue.

Thanks for the replies and tips! Ended up just ordering some Cooper Road + Trail AT's in stock (275/60r20). With the the WalMart price match they came out to $225/ tire so about $450 cheaper total than the larger G3's.

I've got a buddy who just thew some Cooper Discover ATP's in 275/60r20's (Discount Tire exclusive) on his stock Platinum EB and they looked really good. This should look similar

At the end of the day, I'm not sure how long I'm going to keep the truck. If it ends up being long term I'll go larger next time around.

Thanks again for the help.

Wow. that looks really nice.
I have 275/65 20 Recon Grapplers- they are the SL flavor, so only 47 pounds- or ~5 lbs. more than stock. Small hit in mpg (~1 mpg). No road noise increase-and actually a better ride in my opinion with the extra sidewall. I think if you go too much beyond that you will start seeing degradation to your mileage.

Don’t forget to recalibrate for the increased tire circumference - pretty easy to do in Forscan.

Lots more info on this in the “Aftermarket tires on stock wheels” thread on this forum.

Good luck with your decision!:

That looks great. I put the Ford Performance Fox 2" lift kit on my 2022 PB a couple of years ago - but kept my stock Hankook AT2 tires since I'm on city streets 99% of the time and figured I wouldn't get any money for those if I swapped out for 275/65 20 tires I wanted. I'm looking to buy the Recon Grapplers later this summer. With the lift kit, I should have a little more clearance in the front to avoid any rubbing on turns. I looked on Discount Tire and the LT275/65 20 weighs 58lbs. Where can I find the SL version if those are only 47lbs?

I got mine at Discount Tire- ~ $1,700 installed back in March of ‘23. I’ve got 32,500 miles on these- plenty of tread- should get 50-60k out of them at least.

Looks like they still have them. This is the one you want:

I'm buying the 275/65 20 SL Recon Grapplers for my winter drives to the CO mountains later this year. They are $355 each at Discount Tire. I found them for a little less somewhere else - but it's a long drive to that store. I tried to get them to price match - but they said they couldn't cause that was their cost. They offered the LT version at $326 each. I don't want those due to the weight and lower tread life/warranty. I guess I'll pay $355 a tire.
