There are three kinds of "foam" on the MX4 for the 21+ with short bed. The first is the weather stripping that you apply to the top rail of the bed near the cab to "seal" the cover to the bed when you tighten it down. The second is a very thin layer that rides the full length of the MX4 rails and rests on the edge of the bed rails of the truck (these are built-in and can't/shouldn't be removed). The third are bumper pads that are supposed to be applied to the back side of the cover that rests against the window/truck cab.

I did see in the instructions that there's a fourth kind which are "filler strips" labeled as part (E). Those did not come with my installation so I skipped that step. It's possible you received them, but don't actually need them.

Thanks. The strips I removed were already on the rails but I think that was a mistake. Not positive but it does seem much better without them.

Bak changed the rail design and the new ones are a pain to install. My MX4 was replaced under warranty and the new one is trash. I had the same issues with the rails. Finally took it to a real truck authorized dealer and tipped the mechanic a few bucks to properly install it. The new clamps in the front don’t stay tight, a plastic corner piece broke, and the second panel latch won’t latch unles you pull the cord while closing it. So so disappointed.

I just installed mine the other day on a 23 5.5'. Ran into the same issue. I found a video Realtruck posted on YT for a 24 F250 install and realized I had not snapped the clamps into the rail. Once I positioned the clamps correctly so they wouldn't interfere with the inside wall (around 6" from the ends of the rails) they were level and just a few minor tweaks to get all panels to snap in place.

I checked out this thread because I almost ordered the MX4 the other day, then I read some reviews of people having similar problems that @gtstricky had here. Somebody also said they received theirs with a big scratch in it. The vendor gladly replaced it, but they had to go through all the shipping back and forth. I found a Real Truck dealer right near me with a great reputation. The install seems easy enough, but I figure this is what they do every day, and why not support a local small business.

Hmmmmmmm - you may have gotten someone else’s return …
Not sure about that, when I had an issue with mine they just sent me an entire brand new cover with rails and all. And they didn't want the old one back.

Installed a BAK MX4 on my 2024 Platinum a few days ago. Had a hard time getting the rails to sit right, until I had my buddy re-read the instructions. Also watched a video and learned about getting the clamps to click in place. After that it was pretty straight forward. I had a BAK F1 on my 2015, and the MX4 is way lighter. Very glad I got it. The only problem is that they changed the side rails, and the BAK Box tool box does not fit anymore. Have to fabricate something to make it work.

You got a backflip. Get the leer, folds up smaller, doesn’t rest against the cab, smaller rails, no bong looking tubing, and works great.

Got the BackFlip MX4 (448339) for my ‘21. Can’t get the rails to sit flush. I have to lift them to get the latches to engage. Tried putting them on loose, tight, raised, lowered. Nothing seems to help. Came with the foam wedge already attached. Should I remove that?
