The why is because I’ve never owned a vehicle that’s taken a 20k depreciation hit in less than two years. The mileage is horrible and we aren’t using it for its intended purpose and I no longer have anything to tow. Expensive to insure and the registration here in Calif is bullshit expensive.
As far as the what. I have no clue. Maybe a Nissan Pathfinder or the new Mazda Cx70. Looking around and trying to research different options but it’s tough.
I was lucky, and bought on Ford A/Z Plan which was $8000 below MSRP. But I'll agree with the other shortcomings, and fuel mileage IS waaay worse than my 21 Lariat 2.7L EB (mostly due to fatter A/T tires and 3.73 rear end). Since I don't seriously off-road, or tow much other than a light utility trailer, the rear end ratio is a complete waste of time, other than it does make for exhilarating acceleration.

There's a lot of ugly out in the market right now. Image folks buying in the heart of the craziness....paying maybe $10k over MSRP, and because it was such a big number, deciding to finance the car for 84 months!!! Many...most...maybe all of these are underwater in terms of current value and their loan balances.

Yes sir, that’s a very true statement. Although I didn’t pay over MSRP, I still managed to NOT make a very sound decision on buying this truck. So I’m getting out of it while I can control the bleeding and even though it’s gonna cost me money to do it, I’ll be happier. We will do the one car family thing for awhile until I find the right vehicle for the right price and I’ve got plenty of time to do it. No rush buying or buying for the flashy coolness anymore.

Sometimes the optimal financial decision is not the best decision for your family. I remember many "experts" stating that everything had changed after COVID where there wouldn't be any more big discounts, limited dealer stock, most vehicles would be ordered, etc. A lot of "experts" were wrong. Give yourself a break.

Selling two years after buying new and realizing the $20K hit is probably the worst financial move you could make. Why not just enjoy the truck for a few more years. The worst of your depreciation has passed.
Yep, you probably don't want to hear that quote, but he is right. Might be in your best financial interest to keep it for 3 or 4 more years, enjoy it as much as you can ... I am looking to license my vehicles in either Florida or Texas, but domicile change is a big process (but you will save about $700/year).

It’s sold. And I lost 10 grand. Time to move on

I feel for you guys in SoCal. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in the mid 90s, and the place was still fairly affordable back then. Gas was $0.99/gallon in October 1998 (not a joke, look it up). My half of the rent, splitting a nice apartment with a fellow Lieutenant just a block from Oceanside Pier, was $550/month. Utilities were ridiculously cheap, as we left the windows open most of the year. And the state hadn't completely gone off the political deep end yet.

Ah, the good old days. I'm glad I don't live there now.

We own a 2021 CX-9 carbon edition that we purchased new back in 20. It's absolutely beautiful both outside and in. The fit and finish are eons ahead of high trim F150s (no bash on the F150, I adore mine) and the interior quality easily rivals and in some cases exceeds most 3 series BMW/C series Merc/A series Audi. The little turbo 4 banger sips gas when not stomping on it and gets surprisingly peppy when in sport mode. With a set of snows, it's AWD system made it our go-to vehicle (over the EcoD gladiator we owned at that time) in gnarly snow and ice while we lived in the Poconos. It's about the only vehicle we've owned where I never worry about getting from point A to B regardless of weather or emergency etc. Oil changes are a joke, 20 minutes max. Zero trouble with it.

It's our first Mazda and my wife test drove just about everything in that segment, nothing really compared for the price-point, warranty, quality etc. My wife has entertained getting into the smaller CX70 or even the CX50 now that we don't need the 3rd row the 9 provides but it will be paid off this year and it still looks new so we plan to just keep it for a few more years.

Thank you for that info. We are looking at the PHEV CX90 and 70. Don’t need the three rows so maybe the 70. Glad yo hear you’re a fan

It is a crazy market right now... I lost 10k on a 22 Frontier of all trucks- and I bought it under MSRP, lol. I just hated it, the 9sp trans was horrible. Bit the bullet and traded. But at least the F150 was 13k under MSRP and 1.9%. Took some of the pain away. But a year earlier, I could have made money on the Frontier. Supply and demand- and Ford is flooding the market right now which drives used truck prices down due to the rebates.

For sure brother. It is a crazy market and lots of people are in bad shape because of it.
