Look what I picked up yesterday. This notice is only a few days late for me. Lol

Thought this was only 21s. Maybe it was dropped somewhere before being mounted in the truck.

These diffs are known to blow apart in reverse without the Torsen too, especially in 2021 models. I don’t think it’s a Torsen thing.

Damn.. I was hot-pedaled in reverse yesterday getting myself out of a snowbank. Always 4L though.

Honestly i'd rather it fail under warranty though

I do believe most of them have been within 3yr/36k. I assume, and could be wrong, that this would fall under the longer power train warranty. It could be a defect on a batch that is randomly being used since apparently 2023 trucks have it happen.

Just one of the many reasons I have ESP coverage. I saw a few threads on this exact issue before buying my used truck.

Are you going to replace it or dealer it? I'd love a handful of photos of the parts to see why these randomly decide to grenade their pumpkins since ford is silent. Based on general recall statistics there should be about 300 instances of this already. Need NHTSA filings, this could leave one stranded. Ford pulled the torsen from the raptor R for a reason. Forget half shafts, the diff housing is a clear liability.
I had it towed straight to the dealership and I'm going to expect them to replace everything under warranty. I did some pretty hard sh*t with my '16 Lariat and never had a diff issue in 100,000 km (plenty of other stuff though). Think they'd replace this POS with a torsen?

I’m guessing by that comment you don’t have the optional Torsen?

I guess we jumped the gun there.

I did see on the tremor forum, someone had their front diff serviced under warranty. The dealer installed the torsen diff for him. All he had to do was buy the unit. You can use your FordPass points on it too.

No it's the regular front diff, not the torsen. Apparently the torsen diff is actually cheaper than the regular one because it's less complex? So I was told. Since they have to replace the entire thing anyway, maybe it would actually save Ford money.

Regardless of what happens, I'm not going to pay any extra into it. I have it on a 3-year lease and after this I am definitely not keeping it.

So has this been narrowed down to any specific configuration of differential, trim, year or circumstance?

You can lease anything. If you wanted a 36-month lease on a pair of fuzzy slippers... I know a guy that would do it.
Unless something has changed, Ford doesn’t lease Super Duty trucks.

Here's the pic the dealer sent me. The diff cracked entirely in half, and if you look at the casting it looks "bubbly" in places at the top and bottom. I'm no metallurgist, but that looks like a casting defect to me.

Ford is fixing it, but because it's a warranty repair they have to put the same part back in so no upgrading to a torsen, and I don't feel like paying extra for one.

Gas porosity is formed because molten metal is excellent at trapping gasses so as it cools these bubbles form

then your diff goes BANG

although i'm blown away at how perfect that failure is on the cross section

I guess I didn’t think so because of the bed etc, it’s likely to get dinged up with towing or using bed. I don’t think I’d ever lease, I’d rather have no limitations on mileage or modifications. Yes I pay more per month on my loan but after 4 years my payment is $0. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Learn something new every day.
