Buddy of mine just got a brand new powerboost. He is complaining of a hard downshift from 6 to 5th. When I got mine I recall hearing about a learning curve the transmission has when new. Something about learning your driving habits or something like that. Could someone please point me to the specifics of this I can share with him? I didn’t find anything in the manual. I could be looking in the wrong place. Thanks!

This transmission is used in several different vehicles and my understanding is that it learns to work with whatever vehicle/engine configuration it is installed in not so much the person driving it

After a fresh battery I set my truck in sport mode daily for a week as I read on here. Normal mode shifts smooth with no hiccups.

There really isn't anything to do but just drive and it will learn shift points. This is nothing new at all. My 2011 was same way learning shift points. Adapts to how you drive supposedly, I just did the sport mode thing as an experiment.

I had exactly the same problem in my 2022 F150 3.5Ecoboost. Teeth rattling downshifting from 6th through 4th. Mentioned it to local Ford Dealership during an unrelated recall. Service Advisor wasn't surprised, writing it up before I was done even describing the problem. Got the truck back a week later where the "transmission computer" was "reprogrammed". Problem resolved. In summary, this appears to be a known "issue" at Ford. resolved with a software update/reprogram. Covered under warranty.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
These things should shift like Corvettes/Mustangs. I have a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali XL and a 2023 F150 XLT. They both slide through 1/2 and 2/3 like the 700R4 of old. I just hope Precision Transmission learns how to make them work when they go out.

Transmissions remain rocket science until the aftermarket gets hold of them.

My '23 5.0 does this as well. Hard downshift from 6 to 5. After a couple thousand miles it has become significantly better, but I still get a rough downshift every now and then. I've thought about bringing it in to the dealer, but at this point it doesn't bother me enough to warrant taking the time for that. I'm also unsure if they'd be able to do anything other than reset the transmission adaptive learning table which I've already done. I'll ask about it on my next recall visit.

Get a TCM tune from COBB or goosetune and it will be 10000% better! You will not believe the diff!

I had hard downshifts periodically since new, but now at around 14,000 they seemed to have subsided and shifting has been flawless.

Whatever the programming is now. It might skip gears. My 2011 did that after an update to fix rough downshifting.

It's smooth shifting like I would expect it to be. I can't say if staying in sport mode did anything special. I've been driving normal for me with quick bursts from stoplights. Turbos are fun. :)
