Strange noise during cold start on Powerboost

If anyone is still interested what the noise may have been, I got a call from the dealer yesterday saying they think they know what the problem is. They’re replacing a catalytic converter, I guess they got a code for it. Doesn’t seem like a noise a cat would make to me, but I’m no expert.

Cats have been relocated in cars to make them less vulnerable to theft, to make them "light off" (heat up) sooner, to "package" their heat away form the transmission (or battery) etc. I wonder if Ford has gradually made changes till the cats were mounted in a way they suffer too much vibration. If there's not that many failures, it's more likely the OEMs are cutting costs and shipping a higher percentage of defective units (by relaxing QA, using cheaper materials and manufacturing.)

btw. I don't know how this works, but depending up the laws of the state, the owner is entitled to retain any parts replaced during a repair. There's probably a "core charge" on the cat (like a fuel pump or other rebuildable part) but if not, even though it rattle, the metal in the cat is worth a serious couple of dollars either as a take-off part ($800?) or scrap ($400?) I'd be curious to know if the dealer lets you take it.

So another update, Ford still has the truck and hasn’t worked on it since the diagnosis. I was hoping to have it back by now and see if the issue is fixed with this cold snap we have coming. 3 weeks in the shop and I picked it up in October, It’s almost qualified the be called a lemon. The kicker on top of it, the local dealer won’t supply me with a rental. Needless to say I’m less than pleased with how this how turned out.

I have the exact same issue, with the noise coming mostly from the passenger side beneath the truck. I had started another thread (here) before seeing this one. I‘m currently 7hrs away from my dealer, so I haven’t had it looked at yet.

I’ll keep updating this thread as things progress, my dealer seems to think it’s the cat but I really don’t know how it could be that. Next time your truck makes that noise, try touching your tranmission, because mine was vibrating at the same frequency. The noises your truck is making seems identical to mine.

My truck should be done but end of today or tomorrow, temps tomorrow are supposed to be -9F so I’ll be able to test it by end of the week to see if they fixed it. As of now, dealer is still saying it’s the catalytic converter.

Glad to hear your getting it back. Have you seen any bother posts if anyone else has had issue fixed with cat converter??

I had a whining noise coming from the passenger side of my previous vehicle. It went away when I got divorced.

Add another powerboost equipped truck with this noise to the list.

We picked ours up just before Christmas and it was -25 degrees C here right after that.

Mine goes in next week to get looked at.
