Sounds Like I’m Dragging a Chain

Hi, I have a 2021 Lariat 4x4 with 31k on it. It has developed a strange noise, sounds like a chain dragging the ground or dangling down and clanking. I have crawled under it and grabbed and shook everything I can reach. Can’t find anything. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side. I only hear it at low speeds, it’s not very loud. The wind drowns it out once I get over 10-15 mph so I’m not sure if it’s doing it at higher speeds. Any ideas?

Defiantly check for sagging heat shield material on the drive shaft. If that’s not it, the flex pipe on the exhaust (looks like aluminum foil mesh) rattles on my 22 when it gets hot.

Also see if the sound goes away in 4A?

(but yes, check for anything in contact with your driveshaft)

I’m in the same boat. Been to the dealership twice and they haven’t been able to figure it out. Low thudding sound that picks up with speed. Loudest between 10-15ish mph. I can feel it thudding under the truck, but no change in volume with windows down. It’s driving my crazy and low speeds. I zip tied my phone under the chassis to record and haven’t been able to figure it out.

Does your truck have Max Tow?

Yes.

I’ll look at the heat shields again. The one over the gas tank is loose and hanging down on the tank but it’s not hitting the driveshaft, about 2” clear of it. It’s not the aluminum looking shield, it’s the felt material one. I thought it was more for noise than heat. I’ll check that flex pipe too.

Take each rear wheel off and check to see if the bolt has sheared leaving the blod head rattling behind the center cap.

have you checked the exhast insulation pad underneath the truck to make sure its not sagging and rubbing on the driveshaft? I have heard of that problem

Take each rear wheel off and check to see if the bolt has sheared leaving the blod head rattling behind the center cap.

You don't need that yet. Just pop off the center decorator plastic Ford emblem with a plastic tool or small screwdriver and look/feel inside. If the bolt is sheared off, feel inside to see if it's just sitting in there. If it is sheared off and you cannot see the bolt head laying there, that is the problem regardless.

That’s the culprit. Guess I’ll be taking it to Ford and seeing what kind of shit show it is to get that replaced.

Mine is a 21 5.0 crew cab Lariat 4wd with max tow. Passenger side bolt sheared off. 31k miles but it’s been making that noise for 3k probably.

That’s the culprit. Guess I’ll be taking it to Ford and seeing what kind of shit show it is to get that replaced.

They'll have to replace the whole axel.
