I’m recently recovering from shoulder surgery and unable to do my of my own maintenance, so I’m taking my 21 XLT to the dealer for an oil change and tire rotation. They have a package they are suggesting for my mileage (87,000). They want $220.00 to do this and looking at what they have listed, the only thing I see aside from oil change and tires i would want is transmission fluid level check. Thoughts? Because I feel like I’m being charged 220 for oil change and tire rotation.

IMHO, getting the transmission level checked is worth it - BUT if you have not had your transmission serviced, do it. Have the pan dropped and filter changed. I would also recommend having the diff lube changed and if your truck is a 4x4, the transfer case and front diff too.

The dealer is looking for things to fix, so be aware of that.

That does seem high to me - I have a "full service" every 5K miles at my dealer (because I don't have the tools, cannot easily recycle the oil and honestly they can do it in 45 minutes - it would take me 3 hours). With full synthetic oil, motorcraft filter and tire rotation - plus inspections - my bill is about $110 (and that is in SoCal). Not sure if they can really check the transmission level? I was told it takes a lot of time - they have to get it up to temp, etc.?

I checked the dealer where I bought mine & oil change is $80, tire rotation $30, multipoint inspection “free.”

If you’ve done your own oil changes before maybe you’ve noticed:
no lube zerks on the drive shaft
no lube points on the steering linkage
no u joints on the front axle
since they have access to the underneath via lift or pit how much time is involved to shine a light on the exhaust system?
how much time is involved while dispensing the new oil in looking at things under the engine.
the wheels are off for the rotation how much effort is involved to look at the rotors and take a peek at the pads?
smoke and mirrors make it sound like you are really getting a lot for your money.
I just don’t like people who take advantage of others.

On order ‘22 RCSB.
WTF…

Inspect & Lubricate Front Axle Shaft U-Joints
Inspect & Lube Steering Linkage, Suspension & Driveshaft (this is when i nearly spit my coffee out. can you imagine the guy whose job it is to lube the driveshaft. Just two hands covered in grease rubbing the shaft back and forth….)

Have them do it then make them show you what was grease/lubed. Then ask for a refund.

now this is my kind of old ford upgrade: a mercury from a decade later.

I see folks dropping LS-3 and such into classics and cringe; they should be prosecuted for a crime against Americana!

But this is something that could plausibly have been done in its own time period (and likely happened more than once!)

"PowerBeast" - our 2021 F150 Lariat 4x4 Powerboost
You could ask for "The Works" - it's a Ford program most dealers offer.

The Works Package Synthetic Blend Oil Change and More*
  • Tire Rotation and Pressure Check
  • Brake Inspection
  • Vehicle Checkup
  • Fluid Top-Off
  • Battery Test
  • Filter Check
  • Belts and Hoses Check

Costs $95 at my dealer (sometimes they send a coupon for $65).

Around here, that is a common set of things places supposedly do. They usually offer some kind of sweet deal just to try to get you to be a future customer. Does not mean that you have to go back to them. Next time an oil change is due, see who else has a deal going on.

Down side to that is they will always find something that requires more money to deal with. Some places will show you what is going on or take a picture of it and show you.

What you have to decide is: You are recovering and have always done your maintenance. This time you cannot, so is it worth the extra $100 or so for a new set of eyes on your truck? Yes it looks like a tire rotate, oil and filter only. If you say no and just do the oil and filter with tire rotation, will you be satisfied knowing that they have suggested all of the other "checks?" You've saved a lot over the years already. My guess is they are going to look around anyway for potential money making repair items, but you are not going to get a report if they dont find anything. JMO
