Road salt removal techniques, wash that corrosive crap off!

So here’s some info I hope some will find useful. The gadget I made has been patented, feel free to copy as you will. A patent is nearly useless unless you have a small fortune just to protect it.

About 15 years ago, I started with the idea to figure out a way to rinse/wash the underside of the truck and FJ after the storms to remove the road salts. I had the idea to use some salt water wash chemicals I had laying around from my years in Florida. I had a boat and two wave runners and use a wash called Salt Away to remove the corrosive salts. This stuff chemically neutralizes the corrosive actions of the road salts and prevents rust.

At first, I used a sprinkler on a hose. It didn’t work well in the middle of Kansas, 12* and windy. Hard to control and even harder to keep from getting soaked.

So I made a “j bar” spray wand from PVC. I used it to spray Salt Away to neutralize the road salts. It works extremely well. Only needs a garden hose, no pressure washer needed. Shown is another product, Salt’s Gone, same basic chemical idea, different brand. I have a second solution mixer I use by hand for the exterior, wheels, wheel wells and such.

Hope at least a few of you find some usefulness of this “novel”. Happy New Year…..wash those dirty trucks!

Nice! I'm in FL so I don't have to worry about road salt but I love seeing DIY contraptions like this.

Nice sprayer. I live in Canada where road salt is used by the tons. I hand wash in winter with warm water (not hot water) in my garage. I use a garden hose sprayer to spray off the under side of my truck about one a week. Spraying the under side of the truck in salt country makes a big difference, all my previous truck after 10 years were in a better shape than other trucks on the road of the same vintage and easier to work on the under side.

I have used the salt away product down south with the seadoo's, but up here in Canada during the winter i just spray with warm water when its mild enough to get the hose out. which now a days is often. Warm water breaks down salt and its cheaper.

I suspect the "Salt Remover" is nothing more than soap and water. Salt (Sodium Chloride or Magnesium Chloride) is a very stable molecule, if you "break it down" to neutralize it you get Sodium or Magnesium and Chlorine, all very reactive and much more corrosive than the salt itself.

Salt loves to be in solution with water and will jump off your truck into water and be rinsed away just using a hose. I like the spray ball and PVC pipe idea to get the maximum amount of water into all the nooks and crannies under a truck.

I just go thru the car wash 2 or 3 times a week. I have a monthly unlimited plan. And, like mentioned above, I don't hang on to them long enough for it to be a problem. I'm trying to decide to order a 2025 or wait another 6-8 months and order a 2026. Either way, it'll be a 3.0l diesel.

Nice setup! Necessity is the mother of invention. Living in Pennsylvania, PennDOT applies salt brine to the roads which is more corrosive than regular rock salt so I try to wash that crap off as soon as I can. I use something similar I got on Amazon but it attaches to my pressure washer. Coincidentally, snow is in the forecast for Monday so I will probably be using it soon.

Ford discontinued the diesel after 2021 because they weren't selling very many. I haven't heard of any plans to bring it back.

Oh, well I guess since we are on an F150 forum I shouldn't have assumed he was talking about a Ford, lol.
