There is a manual release for the fuel door, located up underneath by the backside of the door. The manual should explain it better.

So the door release cable didn’t work either?

I had suggested to him about the manual release and said he could find it in the manual. Maybe he is someplace with poor cell and he hasn't seen these messages yet.

Limped into Amarillo on fumes. My phone works again. Odd that when I searched the Sync in truck owners manual for "Refuel Error" I got zero hits. Acrobat got the same results searching both Job 1 and Job 2 2021 owners manual PDF versions. Tried again with my laptop. Searched Ford.com owner manual for my vin looking for "Refuel Error." Not there. Nor is that nice table. Only information message listed is "Check Fuel Fill Inlet." You would think that with an online manual you could keep it current.

i tried again after being parked 15+ minutes. Same error. After seeing these posts and the 2024 manual I will go back out and yank the release cable. Will report results.

Thanks guys.

Cable yank worked. Fueled up. But fuel door is not closing completely and I am getting a message about fuel door being open. Tried pushing the opem button and the door popped loose. Closed it firmly but no cigar. Tried several iterations of button pushes, door closes and cable releases...

Right now door closed but not flush and the message keeps popping up. Anyone solved a problem like this?

Glad you got the initial problem sorted at least.

Anynissue with that flappy valve in the fuel inlet? Can you move it with your fingers to see if it isn't seating properly?

Did you try ganking on the door a bit too hard before trying the manual release? Hope you disn't bend something in the hinge.

Flappy valve working ok. Did not pry on the door at all so that was not a factor....

But SUCCESS!

The light of day allowed me to check things. Release cable ok. Pushed release button. Got "Door Open." Closed door and it did not latch. Repeated a few times.

Examined the door pin carefully. It was rotated about 1/4 turn. The flat spot must be exactly on top. Gave the pin a twist, closed the door and the door latched! Cycled through button, door opened, closing the door several times. No issues!

Thanks all. Road trip continues.

Open questions:

1) What caused the pin to twist slightly? Cable release? Bumped somehow on the previous fill?
2) What caused the original "Refuel Error." Hours driving in 95+ heat so pressure issues (doubtful since that happens all the time here in Texas)? Was the pin already twisted at that point? Will it happen again?
3) And why the hell can't Ford update the online 2021 owners manuals with the nice table in the 2024 version?

FORD: Having my truck posting messages undocumented in the owners manuals is, as we say here in Texas, "NO BUENO!" Isn't keeping the manual current the best reason for soft copy/online? No... just saving a few $$$ huh?

Thanks again all. The manual post saved my bacon.

When I replaced mine due to a torn boot, they get twisted into place for install.

Many others replace the OEM plastic ones with these metal ones that screw in versus twist:

See how modern technology makes our lives so much easier? Maybe the next "advantage" will be the truck won't let you in if their is a bug on your windshield.
