no, they can’t remove the axle tubes and reinstall. Hard to say what he’s talking about about the pumpkin, one could speculate he’s talking about the differential carrier itself, not the housing.
I drop mine off next week and I guess we'll see what happens. Twice I asked for the parts list of what was ordered and they just say it will be listed out in the work order. Whatever, it's free so just fix it and I'll be happy. For what it's worth mine hasn't been leaking now, just noisy.

My leak has stopped, but the whine is definitely there.
Not sure when I’ll get it back to them, but gotta get fixed.

The whine may be a result of some minor damage to gears from the previous leaks and loss of fluid. I recently had a tech at my dealer's point out evidence of a weep on the front axle end asking if I wanted the seal replaced. I said yes! ...And top off the fluid... Well, it took 1 1/2 qts (that's close to empty). I'm lucky, no noises, etc but it was close...

You know, it doesn't take much of a defect, scratch, etc on a polished shaft to cause a leak.
The last replacement of the seal they also replaced the flange because they said there was scoring on it and with that so far no leaks.

Picked mine back up, they replaced the gear set, pinion and bearings all chewed up. Replaced the cover too and all the noise went away. Now just on the lookout for leaks. Here is what they did and saw.

Mine started leaking for a 4th (or 5th?) time about 300 miles after the last repair. Traded it for an AT4x 6.2, MUCH better truck in my opinion. I know all the half tons today are basically turds and each has its problems. But I’ll say the high trim GMC trucks have ford beat on interior quality and the fact you can still get a v8 in them. GMC also isn’t doing the “let’s remove small features from the top trim and raise the price” bull shit ford is doing

The incompetence is amazing. You go in for a seal and then have noise in the diff. That is caused by crushing the crush sleeve further and all points to incompetence on the tech.
Exactly what happened to mine, took it in for a pinion seal leak under warranty and got the truck back and the rear end whines, after multiple trips back to the dealer and them telling me its the "transmission pump" and its normal, I gave up and have just been driving it. Now the pinion seal is leaking again and I don't even want to take it in to a dealership so some hack mechanic can half assed "repair" it. I'm seriously debating taking it to my trusted small shop mechanic and paying to have it done correctly.

Do yourself a favor. After about 500 miles by a lube locker gasket, and remove the diff cover and drain fluid. Reseal the cover and fill the differential.

it is mind-boggling that dealers do not drain fluid and service it following a gear set change
