Changed the oil today @ 1000 miles.
I had thought that the oil filter would drip into the black plastic tray mounted below it and drain out the front at what looks like an exit trough (in front of the cross member in the photo below). But instead, the oil that dripped out of the filter as I was removing it went into the tray and drained out of a random area further back under the engine in the area where there is a metal corrugated plate.
Literally just one drop of oil came out of the trough.
Truck was parked level; if anything, rear was a little higher than front (which should have helped).
=> Has anyone else had this problem?
Maybe the tray is installed wrong on my truck?

The tray has 2 drain paths. One out the front that you have pictured, one out the rear, where the oil actually came out. This is to accommodate a raked forward oil change and a front raised oil change.

Like you said I would think the oil would come out the front, but it all depends on the level of that tray, just know that there is an alternate path.

Thanks.
Maybe next time I'll jack up the rear of the truck. It'd be easier (and less messy) if the oil came out the front of the tray.
Adding a photo (for others who may read this thread). Blue arrow is where I would LIKE the oil to drain; Red arrow is where it decided it wanted to drain.

Isn't this for the drain lug though? OP was talking about the oil from the filter when the filter is removed.

TBH, I am surprised (and annoyed) that Ford could not come up with a better design to prevent oil from the filter making such a mess.

I found the same thing when I changed the oil, front of truck up on ramps. Next time I plan on putting a temporary tube on the back drain on the tray so it won't drip on the frame. The drain plug has it's own issues dripping onto the frame and under shield plates.

Mark, do you have a 5.0 or is this also an issue with other engines?

Experienced the same drain plug and filter issues on my first oil change today.

Terrible design. I’ve had easier and cleaner oil changes on smaller tighter applications. I thought this was going to be a breeze!

When I did my second oil change on my 5.0L I wrapped the crossmember near the oil drain plug in an absorbent pad and used a "form a funnel" to direct the oil to the drain pan. This worked well, no oil on the frame to cleanup.

The oil filter drain tray was better this time but I didn't get a good "funnel" made from aluminum foil on the rear tray drain so some oil dribbled on the frame. I'm going to try using the tube from inside a used up paper towel roll clamped on the rear drain next time and wrap the frame in front and back of the tray with an absorbent pad as I can.

I've read online that Ford Techs have been having issues with the oil filter drain tray for years. Even if the oil doesn't dribble on the frame, the tray itself is hard to clean out after the new filter is in and customers come back saying there is a leak when it's just some oil coming from the tray.

It can definitely go either direction.

But if you jack up the rear, how is the oil pan going to drain all the way? While we are at it, an oily frame is a frame without rust, just saying. Yea I know this will grind some the wrong way, but it's just oil and it will wipe off. Do we really need to sweat the small details when there a folks worrying about getting nuked?

I wonder if there is a kit somewhere to locate the filter elsewhere.

The form a funnel did work pretty well for the drain plug issue but I don’t see any workaround in regards to the filter drainage issue.

Even though I chased it with a bunch of brake cleaner I still found some drips on the garage floor.

Another thing worth mentioning is the fill tube location. I think I might need a different style funnel where I can pour in at a better angle. The funnel I have didn’t work out very well. It’s meant just for a more of a horizontal application.
