Cooler weather I go with 20W, hot weather 30W. I typically change my new motor oils after 500 miles to get the break-in oil out then again after the next 500 miles then go to the regular intervals. My new truck was driven 300 miles highway to get it to my dealership. With the top/Start crap feature which I turn off after starting my truck using 30W makes no sense.
If you have motor issues and Ford and dealership know you are not using recommended oil viscosity your warranty may not cover the failure. You are taking a avoidable chance.

MFG specs are nothing more than "recomendations" not mandatory warranty busting rules of operation. Show me data that states 20W offers less protection and against what and at what temperatures? I ran 20W in my Ram Hemi for 14 years and in my 5.0 Stang for three years in the cool months and 30W in the hot months. In the upper states where the temps are at sub zero they run 5W oils in the cold months. No worrries here
I can confidently tell you that vast majority of us do not run 5W oil in the cold months... and I'm from the coldest town in the lower 48 where temperatures routinely get in the negative 40s. Also, your warranty can absolutely be voided if it can be proven that the wrong weight oil caused the problem. Think oil pumps or lifters failing prematurely (especially with hydraulic lifters...).

why not just run straight 20W then? and straight 30W in the winter?
Reversed the weights. My point is, if you don't believe a multi viscosity 5-30 will provide 20W when temps call for it then why are you not running straight 20wt (or 30wt)? A 5-30 can provide 20Wt protection but a 5-20 wont provide 30Wt protection if needed.

This thread is dusty but it got sidetracked from the original intent so I'll make this my first post. If using a synthetic oil there is no reason not to go 6000 miles or more between oil changes. While I won't go a full 10k miles like some, you can always send in a sample of your used oil to Blackstone to see how it's doing. In this vehicle I use Royal Purple 5w-30 exclusively with changes around 6k, sometimes less, sometimes more. Life gets busy sometimes and you can't change it when you want. Below is the report so you can see there is room to go a little longer if I don't have time to change it when the time comes with this particular oil.

This is not a first salvo in an oil war(Amsoil guys please don't start) just a FWIW to show the tools available in checking if your oil routine is working. Cleary in this case I can go longer between changes if needed. So to sum it up, modern full synthetics can go a long time between changes, just use a good filter and check your oil during fill ups.
