My first job in 1993 was a grease monkey. $13.95 for a LOF, $14.79 w/ tax up to 5qts. Filled the washer fluid, tire pressure check, etc. I made $11/hr. & did 2-3 per hour. After the 4th oil change the 5th was free, kept track of via a punchcard.

It was a way to get cars in the door and lead to other, better paying work. Like a happy hour, so to speak, the mindset was to basically break even.

Now the same grease monkey still makes $11/hr and the dealer charges $80-100 for the work they perform, because they think all services should have the same 300% profit margin.

Has anyone seen these recently? I feel like I used to get emails and such all the time about service specials, or could just go to my dealers website and there would be a coupon. But I haven't seen one in awhile. And they don't give you enough points to use fordpass rewards.

I'm ok with spending $80 on the works (well i think its a little spendy but ok), but I feel like they have been charging over $100 for awhile which seems very high for a oil change and tire rotation.
Take 5 and jiffy lube are gonna cost you that much.

Oil change coupons have been kinda slack. But getting your oil change their then you don't have to keep up with change interval records.

The best part of this oil change was that I didn't have an appointment, and they were done in less than an hour. And I went at noon. There were others waiting, and complaining their wait was too long and thats why they made an appointment, etc etc.

Once they forgot about me, and I sat there for like 3 hours, maybe longer. That one was on the house. My service writer left for the day and didn't hand me off to anyone lol.

The first time I had the "Works" the dealership I go to wanted just under $200 after adding the extra oil , shop fees, etc. for full synthetic. I said wait a minute doesn't my ESP cover that? I have the full synthetic option. He looked it up in the system and says Oh Yeah okay you owe 0. I don't know what they are charging now but it was just a few years ago the Works package was typically advertised for $49, regular oil. I do occasionally get offers for $10-$20 off in the mail.

Buy the valve for $40 delivered and an oil drain pan for $15 and they pay for themselves with one oil change. Bezos Claus will deliver all of the supplies you need to your front door for a very reasonable sum, or you can join the Amsoil Cult ("The night time is the right time!") and they'll deliver supplies too.

The real savings changing your own oil isn't money, it's TIME. The only hiccup is when your last change was at a dealer, where they apply torque to the oil filter on like its in the coolant loop on a nuclear reactor. Changing your own oil solves that issue too as you can 1) torque it on correctly and 2) use a filter with a grippy coating (Cult of Amsoil) or has a 1" hex stamped in (low-rent Elks Lodge of K&N).
