Been following this forum for quite a while. slowing saving up to eventually buy a tremor with a 5.0 at some point. However, my current truck (07 King Ranch w/5.4) is not long for this world. I'm looking at some used f150s and came across 2021 with a 5.0 but has 98k miles on it. I know the 2021's have the newer version of the coyote, but looking for input from those that own them currently.
Would you hesitate or shy away from buying a truck with the 5.0 that has 100k on it?
Any common known issues to be aware of with this gen of coyote? (oil leak from a certain area, ticking noises, etc.)

thank you for any input or advise you can offer.

NO. Vehicle taken care of easily has 200K mile life time. I love my 22 5.0 efficiency and power. Especially at a good price with FEAR built in for little reason of a well taken care of vehicle.

I would shy away from buying a vehicle with 100k on it only because of what they want to charge for a truck like that. 20-35k for a 100k mile truck is insane to me.

For the most part all of the motors 21+ have been great, especially compared to previous generations.

10 speed is the issue. You either get a good one, or you don't. Change your trans fluid frequently and hope you don't need a new CDF drum.

My transmission went out. I have a 21 5.0 3.31 lariat. I am the original owner as well but 55k miles and it’s still strong. Trans is like they said hit or miss.

You’ll likely be looking at replacing as general maintenance items the following (unless it was already done):

Front struts & rear shocks.
Brake pads & rotors and maybe brake calipers.
Change transmission fluid.
spark plugs.

On my 2014 F-150 my rear axle wore out at about 185k miles and needed a complete rebuild.

Check the frame for rust.
Check that all service records show service was done per Ford.

I don't like high mileage vehicles but would consider it if it was very well taken care of and the price was right. Otherwise when I was looking back at the beginning of the year I found plenty of F-150 trucks with less than 30k miles for less than 35k and less than 4-years old.

Love my 22 5.0. Just waiting on the ticket. I haven't had this much fun driving since I was in High School!

I have just over 70,000 on my 21, and have had no mechanical issues. I replaced the spark plugs at my last service, as recommended. Other than that, just oil changes. I follow all the recommended service intervals since i prepaid for all service up to 100,000. My only out of pocked expense so far was tires last year.

I would add that I believe you'll get lucky more often with 23+ transmissions since they all have the updated CDF drum. 22's built after August I think have it too.

I purchased my 2021 5.0 with 84K miles on it in 2023. The truck had great records and was well maintained. It was previously used to drive to dairy farms but never hauled or towed. Since I’ve taken ownership the power plant has been fine. I just perform my own oil changes every 5K miles using 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with Wix filter. I did a spark plug change around 100k. Truck has 105K today and going strong.

run the vin and see if it is one of the 21's that had the CDF recall. if it is AND hasn't had it done, I would find another. over 100K miles in 3-4 years, that vehicle has seen some use!

great points, thank you and completely agree. I would definitely expect some maintenance items to be on the list immediately after the purchase which I guess I should consider part of the purchase cost since I would be buying those issues. also, you're right that it is crazy the pricing on these things, both new and used. this one is a 21 lariat with almost 99k and they are asking 37. Might start looking at a new STX or XLT. with deals, rebates and better financing offered, monthly note would be only slightly higher than buying this 21 lariat.

Thanks to all of you for your input and advice.

I have ‘25 5.0 but only 7,000 miles. Love it & no problems so far. Go look at the engine sub forums. 5.0 has fewest issues. Made me feel better about my choice.

To put it in perspective, I paid $39,990 with 4,200 miles for my 2024 SuperCab XL 4x4 back in late December of 2024 and got the Ford 1.9% financing but it is obviously no comparison to a plush Lariat. I really wanted an XLT but the finances were tight and I gave my cherry CX5 to my spoiled daughter instead of trading it in for 10k+ that I could have got for it at the time. It does have the 5.0, and honestly I like it a lot, and I like the work truck no frills nature of it with the rubber floor and basic single zone HVAC controls too. It does have the 12-inch screen and all the latest safety technology that used to be optional not long ago. Its also much quicker than I thought it would be ripping off a 0-60 time of just 5.41 seconds measured with my G-tech. ?

Like Missleboy said, run that vin # to check if that CDF drum was replaced or you run the risk of inheriting a transmission overhaul. $37k might be too much for that truck but prices have changed a lot in the last 6-months and it depends on your area and time of the year too.

My only issue so far is that I don't get OTA updates as a decent chunk of us '21 owners have. Not sure if I'm really missing anything though.
