Raptor R is a totally modified transfer case and transmission. In testing the EcoBoost Hi-Lock case blew apart several times under the stress of the 5.2 Predator. Several clutches etc had to be changed. The engineers have some videos on the testing and development of the R.

The Aviator hybrid was just discontinued a few weeks ago for 2024 and beyond. I don’t think it has to do with the transmission but I don’t really follow the Explorer/Aviator. I believe those use the lighter 10R60.
Yes, the explorer uses the 10R60, I’m assuming the hybrid trans is based off of the 10R60 also

I think the hybrid is a MHT 10r80. All 10r60 references I could find are for the non-hybrid models ??‍♂
Small sample size anyway really.

I believe that you are correct, thanks for pointing that out. However, wouldn't issues with torque capacity be EVEN MORE pronounced on a 10R60 than a 10R80?

WRT the Raptor R T-case: is that an issue with the Hi-Lock Auto T-case AND the 2H/4H/4L ESOF T-case or ONLY the Hi-Lock case? I ask because there's an argument to be made the the ESOF t-case may be the most robust of them all because it is the simplest. I am also interested because I have considered the Hi-Lock t-case upgrade, but don't have a frequent need for it as I live in Texas. If the ESOF compensates for its lack of features with toughness and reliable operation, then my motivation for spending that money falls a lot.

The Raptor doesn’t have an ESOF option so I am not sure. I’ll see if I can find the video when I get home. I believe a few clutches had to be upgraded but it’s a largely similar unit.

What’s the size difference between the 10r60 and 10r80? It’s not insignificant and may not even fit in the explorer/aviator body pan

A TSB dated 5/30/23 made no mention of a 10R60 MHT existing. Just 10R60/10R80/10R80 MHT.

At 9:30 he talks about the Raptor R transmission and states it has several Super Duty 10R140 clutches internally. The transfer case isn’t covered well here, but in the desert ride along one they go over the T-case in more detail from memory

I'm sure they have their reasons, but I'm wondering why they didn't just use the 10R140
120 pounds difference in package weight, the 10R140 is 350 pounds vs the 10R80 being 230 pounds. Use the important clutches and friction plates and you can gain a lot of the benefit without adding too much parasitic mass.
