This evening while rushing to work, I remotely started my truck as I always do and set my keys on the bed rail while loading my bag into the back seat. I proceeded to get in, push to start, and drive my truck away. The keys were left on the bed rail and fell off somewhere between my house and work. I was able to drive 8 miles to work and when I got there and turned the truck off it gave me a warning "start truck now or key will be needed" or something like that. I didn't know what it was talking about, then promptly got a message saying "no key detected" when I tried to press the start button again. So if anyone is wondering if you can drive your truck without keys...you can! Now to figure out how to get a replacement made and get that lost fob deleted or deactivated.

I just tried to recreate this and expected, it wouldn’t let me and gave me the no key detected message. Are you sure your key isn’t at work somewhere?

Positive. Per my ring camera pulling out of the garage, it was sitting on the bed rail as I drove away. And I have a cover on the bed so it couldn’t have fallen Into the bed of the truck.

That’s some bad luck. Sorry to hear it.

I’m only surprised because I’ve had my keys in a bag in the bed of my truck numerous times after remote starting and it’s never let me start without going and bringing them into the cab.

Doesn’t help now but would definitely invest in some AirTags or similar in the future. We have them on everything and have saved so much time and money.

Last I checked it was much cheaper to buy a replacement key on eBay and have a capable local locksmith cut and program it. I saved about $300 doing it that way for my wife’s Pilot (before we bought all the AirTags).

Hmm, so how were you able to start the truck?
The truck was remote started and running, I unlocked the truck, set the keys on the bed rail close to the cab, then got in and pushed the start button. It functioned as if the keys were inside the vehicle with me. I didn't get any kind of notification until I got to my destination and shut the truck off.

In the many many years of driving, I have never lost a set of keys so I'm really mad at myself, but yeah I'm going to be attaching an airtag now. I will get an estimate from the dealer since I'm due to go there wednesday anyways, but I'm sure a locksmith will be cheaper. Thanks! PS does anyone know if its possible to disable that lost key fobs access to my truck via the trucks infotainment? I see "unlink" in the menu somewhere but I'm not sure if thats it. My concern is the keys fell off my truck somewhere right near my house. Don't need a bad guy walking around hitting the alarm button until he finds my truck.

When the new FOB is programed at the dealer, Both FOB's will be required for programing. After programming is complete the lost FOB will no longer be recognized by the truck. In the case of adding a third FOB all three are required for programming as well.

You would be surprised how long something will stay on the bed rail. I left my yeti filled with coffee on my bed rail and I made it a block and onto the main road where it finally fell off and into traffic. No clue how it made it made it past the driveway! Literally almost made it to the freeway

AFAIK, you can't even pull the gear out of P if the key is not inside the truck.
Key at the time was still on the bed rail and with in a distance to be recognized by the vehicle.

Have you looked between the cab and bed it may be lodged between the 2.

@pavementends - not sure what is funny, did you try it in your truck? I saw a post about it, tried it and this is how it works.

Chuckled because not sure how much more clear the guy can be - he has video of what happened, explained it well, yet still getting arguments whether it's possible, maybe I misunderstood. All good, onward!
